During Immersive Sound: From Production to Playback, Mix Magazine and Auro Technologies invite you to discover the wealth of creative opportunities offered by Auro-3D®, a unique 3-layered approach to sound, on Saturday 6 September 2014 at the Sony Pictures Studios, Culver City, CA.
5.1 or 7.1 Surround sound used to be considered the true 3D audio, which was very confusing as this is actually only two-dimensional sound. As a result, Wilfried Van Baelen introduced the general name "Immersive Sound" in 2010 in collaboration with Barco (Auro Technologies' exclusive partner in Digital Cinema) as the new terminology for "Surround Sound with Height. "Immersive Sound" is as such not related to a channel- or object-based technology, but represents the addition of the final and third dimension, together with the already existing two dimensions creating a hemisphere horizontally and vertically all around the audience.
From the start, the Auro-3D Authoring Tools were conceived as a hybrid solution with vector-based metadata to allow an easy combination of channel- and object based technology. Since sound energy in movies is typically for 90% to 95% related to the channels, Auro-3D has chosen for a channel-based approach up to an amount of about 15 channels. This approach has many advantages, not only in terms of the quality of the experience, but also in regards to the easy integration in workflow and existing distribution bandwidth. Auro-3D's codec technology doesn't require any new standards or new formats due to 100% backwards PCM compatibility. Auro-3D also offers the highest guarantee for the preservation of the creative intent of all immersive sound formats. In the near future, object-based delivery in addition to channels will be based on the upcoming SMPTE standard.
Compared to competing solutions, Auro-3D's unique 3-layered system allows for a much more precise localization of sources in the vertical axis, which is key in achieving the most natural immersive sound experience in front, above and all around the listener.
During the 'Mix Magazine' days, Auro Technologies will showcase a hybrid workflow enabled by the newest version of tools that allows the highest compatibility between object-based mixes and the immersive masters created with Auro-3D's unique 3-layered speaker layout.
Richard King, multiple Academy Award winning Sound Supervisor, will share his experiences on field recording in the Auro-3D format and its many creative possibilities during one of the Auro-3D workshops. Furthermore, workshops will be dedicated to music recording in Auro-3D, the Auro-3D Creative Tool Suite, the technical challenges of Immersive Sound and much more.
Auro Technologies will also be demonstrating various examples of Auro-3D's unique 3-layered system and its creative possibilities during the Mix sound for film at the William Holden Theatre at 01:15PM and 02:30PM.
