Top Stories - Aug. 31, 2016 Spectrum Auction Fails to Meet $88.3 Billion Target The FCC said Tuesday that the forward portion of the broadcast incentive auction has now closed, after Round 27, without meeting the conditions necessary to extend it to a Round 28 or to meet the $88.3 billion target bidders needed to to cover the cost of payments to broadcasters.  more WHY THIS MATTERS: Bidding had slowed appreciably Wednesday and showed signs it would clearly not hit the FCC's magic number. TiVo Ends Q2 With 7.4M Subs As TiVo enters the final stretch of its merger with Rovi, the DVR and video software company revealed in a 10-Q filing that it ended its fiscal second quarter with 7.4 million subscribers, buoyed by gains via its MSO customers. more WHY THIS MATTERS: TiVo added 1.3 million cumulative subs via MSOs during the past 12 months due to growth among such partners as Mediacom Communications in the U.S. and a number of international operators. Broadband Boosts Small Ops' Fortunes TPG Capital's surprise $2.25 billion purchase of over-builder RCN and small Texas-based cable operator Grande Communications could signal a new wave in the cable M&A space: fresh entrants laser-focused on broadband and the potential to offer over-the-top and short-form video services rather than stodgy old pay TV. more WHY THIS MATTERS: That mindset isn't new, as operators such as Cable One and Wave Broadband have been de-emphasizing video for years, but it could bode well for smaller operators that have been forced to concentrate on high-speed data as programming costs have skyrocketed.
