Sweetwater Sound held its annual GearFest June 17-18, and the event turned out to be the biggest yet. The annual convocation—a mixture of trade show, clinics, workshops and more, all held on the internet retailer's campus in Fort Wayne, IN—attracted more than 12,000 participants, who took in more than 200 seminars and visited 20 tents that housed more than 400 manufacturers.

Aiming to help out bands and simply learn something new, Texas-based Austin Signal recording studio has started offering lathe-cut vinyl services—essentially hand-cutting records one-by-one. Intrigued, we sat down with studio owner Jon Neiss to learn more and discovered that's only part of what makes his studio unique.
"Watching Beth [Cosentino] do vocals is pretty incredible, because she is a really great singer and it takes her very few takes to get a main vocal and the harmonies. Those vocal parts aren't in the demos, they are just kind of in her mind. She will just say 'give me another track,' and just start layering all these vocal parts.
