MCN Newswire: FCC OKs Altice-Cablevision; Viewership Rises After Live-Plus-7; House Dems Push Back on Set-Tops

Top Stories - May 4, 2016
FCC Approves Altice's Purchase of Cablevision
The FCC has approved Altice's purchase of Cablevision Systems. The approval came with no fanfare and no commissioner vote, instead OK'd on delegated authority by the wireline bureau.  more
WHY THIS MATTERS: The FCC didn't exactly exalt the deal or impose any deal conditions, and it is a relatively small market size, which factored into the decision to grant it on delegated authority rather than at the commission level. New York State is still vetting the merger, so it can't close yet.

Nielsen: Viewership Rises After Live-Plus-7
The proliferation of digital video recorders, video-on-demand and digital content have pushed traditional viewing habits out the window, according to Nielsen, with some shows attracting their biggest gains in audience well beyond the traditional seven days after original air. more
WHY THIS MATTERS: The live-plus-7-day (L7) rating period is becoming increasingly irrelevant to advertisers, as viewers watch content on a variety of devices at different times.

House Dems Highlight Set-Top Pushback
A trio of Democratic House members have written their colleagues to disabuse them of the notion, if they have gotten it, that the content industry supports FCC chairman Tom Wheeler's set-top box proposal. more
WHY THIS MATTERS: The letter is just the latest pushback from legislators in Wheeler's own party who have expressed concerns about his set-top proposal's impact on copyrights and diverse programming, among other issues.
