Top Stories - April 27, 2016 AT&T Loses 54K Video Customers in Q1 AT&T lost a total of 54,000 video subscribers in the first quarter, as increases at its DirecTV satellite TV service couldn't overcome continued declines at its U-Verse TV offering.  more WHY THIS MATTERS: AT&T has been placing greater emphasis on its satellite TV service, and the quarter was further evidence of that policy, as DirecTV added about 328,000 net new subscribers in the first quarter, ending the period with 20.5 million customers, while U-Verse shed 384,000 video customers, ending the period with 5.3 million subscribers. Google to FCC: Privacy Pledge Unnecessary Google is taking issue with the FCC's proposal to have third parties -- like Google -- voluntarily adhere to cable-like customer privacy rules in exchange for getting access to cable operator set-top content. more WHY THIS MATTERS: In comments filed at the FCC, Google objected to a "quid pro quo" approach to customer privacy that agency chairman Tom Wheeler outlined in his set-top proposal, saying FTC enforcement options and state laws would be enough to regulate its activities, while privacy advocates struck back at the tech giant's suggestion. Turner to Go OTT With 'FilmStruck' Just over a month since announcing it would enter the direct-to-consumer streaming business this year, Turner has set a fall launch for FilmStuck, a subscription VOD service for film aficionados developed and managed by Turner Classic Movies in partnership with the Criterion Collection. more WHY THIS MATTERS: Partnering with the respected Criterion Collection gives the ad-free service cachet with its target audience of film buffs, and Turner said its first direct-to-consumer offering will be priced competitively with other streaming movie services.
