Top Stories - April 28, 2016 Comcast Raising Ceiling for Broadband Data Trials to 1 Terabyte Comcast's controversial trial of usage-based broadband policies in select markets is going up a notch, with the operator moving to terabyte data plans starting June 1.  more WHY THIS MATTERS: The decision to increase its monthly 300-GB soft data cap in the test markets comes soon after the FCC announced several proposed conditions on the pending Charter-Time Warner Cable merger, including one that would prohibit New Charter from imposing data caps and usage-based data pricing for a period of seven years. Smit: Comcast Hasn't Seen an OTT Model 'That Really Hunts' Comcast sees no barriers that would prevent it from building and deploying its own OTT TV service, but the MSO remains unconvinced that the model strikes the right business chord, Neil Smit, president and CEO of Comcast Cable, said on the company's first-quarter earnings call. more WHY THIS MATTERS: "We, thus far, haven't seen an OTT model that really hunts," Smit said, echoing comments he made last year that the company is comfortable focusing on expanding the reach of X1, which its first-quarter X1 additions suggested is happening. TiVo's Roamio OTA Adds Storage, Loses Subscription Fee TiVo has added storage and eliminated monthly subscription service fees for the Roamio OTA, an HD-DVR wth OTT capabilities targeted at cord-cutters, and will launch the new model at retail on May 2. more WHY THIS MATTERS: Removing the monthly subscription fee will put the Roamio OTA on better competitive footing with Channel Master's DVR+, which in January added Sling TV.
