MCN Newswire: Retrying History -- on TV; Cox-Nexstar at an Impasse; Google and the Set-Top Set-To

Top Stories - Feb. 1, 2016
COVER STORY: Making History Into Television SUBSCRIBER EXCLUSIVE
As issues of race continue to influence the country's discourse on politics, crime and punishment, and entertainment, cable networks look to tap a growing interest in scripted content that reflects historical African-American stories and people both past and present. more
WHY THIS MATTERS: From the highly-anticipated "The People v. O.J. Simpson," to History's upcoming remake of "Roots" to WGN America's "Underground," which depicts slaves escaping along the 19th century's Underground Railroad, networks are offering true stories that most viewers will recognize, but haven't been fully explored either on the small screen or in high-school history books.

Nexstar Stations Go Dark to Cox Customers
Nexstar Broadcasting Group stations in nine markets went dark to Cox Communications customers at midnight after the parties could not reach a retransmission-consent agreement. more
WHY THIS MATTERS: Cox said Nexstar was demanding rate increases as high as three times the level the stations had received previously, a characterization the broadcaster said was false while noting it had been in talks with the cable operator for five months without any progress.

Google Gears Up for Set-Top Set-To
Google is apparently already kicking the tires on something in the alternative video access equipment line, and that is not sitting well with MVPDs. more
WHY THIS MATTERS: Only a day after FCC chairman Tom Wheeler circulated a proposal he said would open up the "closed" set-top box market, Google and the Consumer Video Choice Coalition (CVCC) scheduled a demo Friday of a competitive video access solution tied to the possible end of the "era of being forced to rent a box from your cable company."
