5 Great Affordable Condenser Microphones
Beyerdynamic MCE 86 II Electret Condenser Shotgun The MCE 86 II is an affordable and truly superb-sounding hypercardioid shotgun, one I would enthusiastically recommend to anyone. It sounds fabulous and full-range, boasting a rich 50 Hz-18 kHz frequency response. It's lightweight for its size (0.2 lbs.) and ruggedly built with a work-ready, no-scratch finish. Monoprice 600850 Multipattern Large Diaphragm Condenser To my ears, the 600850 is a completely capable multipattern LDC that provides pro-competitive results. Visually, it's on par with microphones four to five times its price; it can inspire talent just as well as a $2,000 LDC. Notably, the 600850 is heavy and its shockmount, though effective, adds significantly to overall weight; 600850 users will need to sandbag and secure stands accordingly. Monoprice deserves commendation for its impressive baseline multipattern LDC microphoneone that many users (and listeners) won't sonically distinguish much from pricier competition. MXL CR89 Large Diaphragm Cardioid Condenser The CR89's high performance capabilities and overall flexibility make it a no-brainer purchase for any commercial studio wanting to inexpensively expand their mic vault, or for the project studio where its low price point may be just as important as its superb sound quality. The CR89 may be your LDC solution. I know I'll be using it for years to come. (Russ Long) More »
MXL Genesis FET Large Diaphragm Cardioid Condenser The Genesis FET is a moderately versatile, defined condenser that excels on vocals. And for $400? It's a bargain-priced, worthy choice. With a nice little kit and a metal shockmount that really works, I will recommend it. (Rob Tavaglione) More »
Sennheiser MK 8 Multipattern Large Diaphragm Condenser Having previously reviewed the excellent MK 4a Sennheiser cardioid LDC made at the company's HQ in Germany for $299 streetI jumped at the opportunity to try its multi-pattern sibling, the MK 8 ($699 street) that is also made in Germany. It's a super useful workhorse for many potential users and applications. And, like the MK 4, the MK 8 isn't a budget mic; it's just a bargain. (Strother Bullins) More »
