Today's Top Stories | #1 | Burger King Marketing Stunt Calls for 'Cease-Fire' With McDonald's
| | In full-page newspaper ads in The New York Times and Chicago Tribune, the hamburger chain publicly asked (tongue in cheek, of course) rival McDonald's to partner with it to create a McWhopper in honor of Peace Day, which is on Sept. 21 and supports global non-violence and a day of ceasefire during conflicts. McDonald's, in a Facebook post, turned the offer down but labeled the proposal a "great idea" for a "good cause." The stunt was a combined effort from BK agencies including Y&R, Code & Theory, The David Agency, Horizon Media and PR agency Alison Brod. Why This Matters: For the price of two full-page newspaper ads, Burger King got an enormous amount of media coverage and publicity. Three Takes: WSJ | Adweek | Ad Age

| #2 | CMOs to Spend More Money on Social, Mobile Despite Inability to Prove ROI
| | Social media spending currently accounts for 10.7% of marketing budgets, according to a study by Duke University's Fuqua School of Business, which surveyed 255 U.S. marketing execs. And mobile advertising is expected to increase by 160% over the next three years. However the study also found that only 15% of the marketers surveyed believe they currently have the proper tools to measure the impact of their social media spending. "Most companies are still in the learning phase, hiring outside agencies to support them," says Christine Moorman of Duke, who served as director of The CMO Survey. Why This Matters: Mobile usage by consumers is growing at an enormous rate, so marketers are going to need to get up to snuff quickly on how to most effectively spend their mobile marketing ad dollars. | #3 | Starcom, Audi Partner With PlaceIQ on Mobile Data
| | The media agency and the automaker have both signed up with the tech company that will work to help them track potential consumers as they move from retail location to retail location, The Wall Street Journal reports. The will be accomplished via PlaceIQ's new offering, the Enterprise Place Visit Rate. Audi is not a Starcom client. Why This Matters: Lisa Weinstein, president of global digital, data and analytics at Starcom MediaVest Group, says the goal is to help clients figure out how mobile location data can be useful in their ad efforts but cautions that such data and how it can be effective is still in its infancy and will take time to be useful at scale for most brands. | TOMORROW'S BIG RATINGS STORIES TODAY | 'MasterChef' Luring Younger Viewers Season 6 of the Fox summer series (8 p.m.) continues to weed out contestants for the $250,000 grand prize. This week the remaining chefs will participate in a restaurant takeover and judges Gordon Ramsay, Graham Elliot and Christina Tosi will decide who makes the cut. The show's rating among adults 18 to 49 and its total viewers are down. But the 1.5 rating it is still drawing places it among the Top 10 broadcast primetime shows. The upshot: MasterChef's ability to draw a solid summer 18-49 demo number has led Fox programming brass to renew the series for a seventh season. |
| Another Comedy Joins NBC Summer Lineup The Carmichael Show stars comedian Jerrod Carmichael in an irreverent half hour inspired by his life with his outspoken family dad David Alan Grier and mom Loretta Devine and therapist in-training girlfriend played by Amber West (9 p.m.). The series will air on consecutive weeks with back-to-back episodes. The upshot: NBC originally was going to air The Carmichael Show following another new sitcom, Mr. Robinson. Instead, the network decided to run back-to-back episodes of Mr. Robinson for a few weeks on Wednesday nights and now The Carmichael Show will replace it in the time period. The Carmichael Show gets a nice lead-in from first-run versions of America's Got Talent, so that should help draw in a large audience.

| 'Mr. Robot,' 'Suits' Shut Down for the Season The freshman USA drama Mr. Robot airs its first season finale (10 p.m.). The network ordered a second season of the series before the first episode premiered. Starring Rami Malek as cybersecurity expert by day who by night joins a hacker group looking to destroy the evil company he's paid to protect, the series has won acclaim from TV critics but has produced disappointing live-plus same day ratings of 0.5 in the 18-49 demo and 1.4 million viewers. Legal drama Suits' fifth season summer finale airs at 9. It has already been renewed for a sixth season. Suits has averaged a 0.6 demo rating and 2.2 million viewers, compared to a 0.7 and 2.3 million last season. The upshot: Lesson to be learned don't order a second season of a series before the first season premieres. |
