Today's Top Stories | #1 | Macy's Dumps Trump
| | The retailer faced with pressure from assorted groups including Presente.org, the largest online Latino organization in the U.S., and MoveOn.org, has broken off its relationship with Donald Trump and will phase out Trump menswear merchandise the chain has been selling for more than a decade. Trump has appeared in Macy's ads and the chain has also appeared in challenges on Trump's Celebrity Apprentice TV show. But Macy's called his comments about Mexicans discriminatory and disparaging. Why This Matters: Macy's has a large number of Latino customers and is well aware that its competitors like Target, Kohl's and JCPenney are making a pitch to win that consumer group over. So this move makes sense from a business perspective. Three Takes: USA Today | MediaPost | Media Life

| #2 | Kaplan Thaler Becomes Publicis New York
| | Three years after Publicis Worldwide's New York office merged with the Kaplan Thaler agency and began using the name Publicis Kaplan Thaler, the parent company has now decided to drop KT from the name and return to referring to the office as Publicis New York, Ad Age reports. Why This Matters: Publicis North America CEO Andrew Bruce says, "Having the name Publicis Kaplan Thaler in New York caused a disconnect" with the rest of the company's North American region. Kaplan Thaler founder Linda Kaplan Thaler, however, will continue in her role as chairman of the New York office. A Take: Ad Age

| #3 | Ad-Supported Cable Continues to Lose Viewers
| | Nielsen's second quarter ratings numbers find that only five of the top 20 ad-supported cable networks showed overall prime time viewer gains in second quarter compared to a similar period last year, MediaPost reports. Up was Fox News (2%), HGTV (13%), Discovery (16%), Food Network (5%) and ID (8%). Big losses included TNT (down 15%), USA (down 16%) and A&E (down 22%). Why This Matters: There has been a lot of attention given to the broadcast network struggles to keep live viewers watching in primetime, but cable, in many instances, is having even bigger problems. This is certainly something advertisers can use as they negotiate their upfront deals with the cable networks. A Take: MediaPost |

| MBPT Spotlight | Ratings Say Lester Holt Deserved Promotion at 'NBC Nightly News' By John Consoli When NBC decided on June 18 to name Lester Holt as Brian Williams' permanent replacement as anchor of the network's nightly news telecast, its decision was made easy by Holt's solid ratings.
Since taking over for Williams on Feb. 9, Holt has been averaging 8.3 million viewers per night, holding a 200,000-viewer lead over the ABC's World News Tonight with David Muir, which has been averaging 8.1 million viewers, according to Nielsen live-plus same day ratings data.
Before Williams was benched by NBC News, his newscast was leading second-place ABC's by more viewers than Holt was, but the 25-54 demo was in that same virtual deadheat. And it's in that demo that the advertisers audience guarantees are made.
In the advertisers' key 25-54 "news" demo, it has been a virtual deadheat, with ABC averaging a 1.68 rating compared to NBC's 1.65.
How had Brian Williams been doing in the demo? And how has the Holt move affected viewership of the CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley? For more, click HERE

| TOMORROW'S BIG RATINGS STORIES TODAY | Japan vs. England in World Cup Semifinal England will meet defending champ Japan in a prime time Women's World Cup soccer match from Edmonton on Fox Sports 1 (7 p.m.). The winner plays the United States team on Sunday at 7 p.m. on Fox. The U.S. defeated Germany on Fox Tuesday night. That match recorded fast affiliate ratings of 3.2 in the 18-49 demo and 9.7 million viewers in the 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. prime time hour. The upshot: Japan defeated the United States in an overtime shootout to win in 2011, so a victory by Japan would set up a rematch. The Japan-England matchup on FS1 should draw several million viewers, but nowhere close to the numbers the U.S. matchup drew on Fox. |
| Halle Berry Re-Enters on CBS The network brings back sci-fi drama Extant for a second summer (10 p.m.). Berry stars as Molly Woods, an astronaut who returns from space mysteriously pregnant. During the second season, Berry is confined by government authorities who believe she might be a threat. New cast member Jeffrey Dean Morgan plays a bounty hunter who works on getting Berry released. The upshot: Last summer in its premiere season, Extant averaged a solid for summer 6.1 million viewers but only recorded a 1.1 in the 18-49 demo and had an older median age of 60.

| 'Mr. Robot' Starts Slow New drama Mr. Robot premiered on USA last Wednesday (10 p.m.) with a 0.5 18-49 demo rating and 1.8 million viewers. The show follows a young programmer who works as a cybersecurity engineer by day and a vigilante hacker by night. USA was hoping the series would draw more millennials to the network but at least for the premiere that didn't seem to work out. Mr. Robot drew a lower 18-49 rating and fewer viewers than its lead-in, veteran drama Suits, which averaged a 0.6 in the demo and 2.1 million viewers. The upshot: Lead-ins still matter and the aging Suits, which is now in its fifth season, might not have been the best choice. Adding to the network's potential dilemma it already renewed Mr. Robot for a second season even before the series premiered. The network has to hope that the 2.7 million viewers who watched the pilot on non-TV platforms before the series debuted will add to the second week's total audience. |
