Editor's Note |
Thank You I'd like to personally thank each and every one of you for your support during 2014, especially as I took the helm of the publication early this year after my predecessor, Chriss Scherer. It has been a learning experience for me as I made the transition from engineer to editor over these past 7 months but I hope you have continued to find the content of Radio magazine valuable. Please feel free to e-mail me any time at radio@radiomagonline.com with your questions, comments and story suggestions. I'm looking forward to making 2015 even better! December Digital Edition This month we look at KSTP(FM)'s upgrade to Audio over IP with WheatNet. We also begin a new feature called "Local Radio Spotlight" where we talk to local radio owners, stations and groups about how they are using radio to serve their communities. FCC Updates |
Commentary on proceedings at the FCC Radio magazine's regular correspondent on FCC related matters, Lee Petro, has had a busy year. He has covered a wide range of topics directly affecting broadcasters, including proposals to revitalize the AM band, waivers (and denial of waivers) for translators, common issues that stations have been cited for by the enforcement bureau, the LPFM filing window and subsequent MX resolution process, updates to tower registration rules, a proposed code for national periodic tests (NPT) of the EAS system and misuse of EAS tones in syndicated programming as well as advertisments, and finally a proposal to legitimize so-called "Franken FM" stations. Dayton Industrial Is "Winding Down" We've seen several manufacturers close their doors this year (sadly) including Larcan (designer of FM translators in addition to their TV equipment), SRS Electronics (who had carried the MARTI legacy and repaired their equipment for many years), Energy Onix, and most recently, Dayton Industrial. From ISDN and Program Circuits to IP Many telephone companies have announced that they are discontinuing ISDN service and dedicated program circuits. Ultimately the solution will be to migrate to IP based services. Fortunately, there are many IP codec options available to fill the gap. Various forms of microwave links are still a viable option as well. More»
Other Notable Stories From 2014 |
HD Radio In the News iBiquity has had a pretty good year. Many new cars are coming out with HD Radio as standard equipment or available with upgrade packages. Another story of note was all-digital testing in the AM band. More» AES67 Takes Off The standard was actually ratified late in 2013. 2014 saw a number of products and manufacturers incorporate it though we still have a long way to go before full interoperability. AESx210 promises to be one potential solution to the "other half" of this interoperability which includes things such as discovery, GPIO, along with other control and "housekeeping" functionality. More» The "Connected Car" 2014 saw some of the first appearances of cars with built-in WiFi. We can expect this trend to continue going forward, particularly as LTE service becomes more ubiquitous across the country. More»
