| | Headlines | | Major Mexican Radio Group Completes HD Radio Conversion Project iBiquity Digital Corporation announced that Mexican broadcast group IMER (Instituto Mexicano de la Radio) has completed its project to upgrade all thirteen of its FM stations to digital HD Radio broadcasts. IMER began digitizing its stations in Mexico City shortly after the Mexican government approved HD Radio Technology as the standard in 2011 and has since begun transmission of two new HD2 and HD3 channels at each station. The HD Radio broadcast equipment for all thirteen IMER stations was provided by GatesAir (formerly Harris Broadcast). More» Report says DAB+ Requires FM Shutdown to Succeed "Without the success of DAB+ there will be no FM shutdown; conversely, without a definite FM shutdown date, there can be no success for DAB+." That is the basic conclusion of a new report on DAB+ and FM in Switzerland published by mediareports.de. 2024 is the currently planned 'sunset' date for FM transmissions in Switzerland, as agreed by members of DigiMig (the Working Group Digital Migration). According to mediareports, "This will enable Switzerland to reap not only the digital dividend in the form of liberated frequency spectrum, but also to gain more programs with better technical quality." More» T-Mobile, Verizon Join Other Carriers in 'Throttling' of Heavy LTE Users T-Mobile's new policy is that unlimited data plan holders that continually upload webcam videos, or that engage in peer-to-peer file-sharing, will be 'throttled' after a series of warnings. Verizon also recently announced a plan to 'throttle' voracious users of LTE on its network, drawing scrutiny from FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler. More» Digris' DAB 'Island' for Zurich Is Now On-Air In July of 2013 the Swiss Office of Communications ('BAKOM') licensed a new company known as Digris AG to build local DAB+ networks in Zurich, Geneva and Bern. Because their coverage areas are purposefully small, and the three cities' networks are not connected, these low power multiplexes have become known as 'DAB islands.' The islands were created with the help of the Swiss Government, and now the cost to each 'station' on the mux is about 800 Euros (about $1050) per month.
