#1 Coors Light Launching New Campaign To Slow Declining Sales
Parent company MillerCoors reported that sales to retailers of the Silver Bullet fell by low-single digits in second quarter, which followed a mid-single digit drop in first quarter. MillerCoors chief marketing officer Andy England said new advertising created by WPP's Cavalry will "get back to the basics of what we know works with Coors Light," Ad Age reports. There will be a shift from recent campaigns overloaded with cold imagery.
Why This Matters:
CoorLight's dilemma could stem from sticking with the same themed marketing campaign for too long. England acknowledges that the company has let the message "get a little tired. We need to contemporize in the eyes of the consumer."

#2 Xaxis Certifies Viewer Authenticity For Brands With Money-Back Guarantee
WPP's ad trading technology platform believes it has the technology in place to weed out bot-based ad fraud, so it is offering advertisers a guarantee that at least 95% of the online ads bought through its service will be viewed by real people, Adweek reports. The new anti-fraud program is called Xaxis Prime and initially will guarantee only digital display ads; mobile will come later.
Why This Matters: Ad fraud and bots have shaken the confidence of the entire ad industry, causing some marketers to shy away from programmatic ad buying. Larry Allen, VP of business development at Xaxis says, "From a buyer perspective, the agency has the ability to help control the problem."

#3 Legal Sea Foods Campaign Tells Consumers It's 'Not A Chain'
The seafood restaurant "company" has 35 locations but chief executive Roger Berkowitz sees the negative connotations some consumers have about the word "chain." The New York Times reports that in a series of new commercials, Berkowitz takes a lie detector test, denying that Legal Sea Foods is a chain. In one commercial, Berkowitz says, "Each of our restaurants is unique, not cookie-cutter…Just don't call [us] a chain."
Why This Matters: Technomic, a restaurant consulting and market research firm, considers a company with 10 or more restaurants a chain. Darren Tristano of Technomic says he has no recollection of any of the top 500 restaurant brands proclaiming in advertising that they are not chains. Legal Sea Foods is ranked 167 on the list, and taking a novel ad approach.

Forget Generation Z For Now—We're In The Age Of Aging
By Peter Hubbell, CEO of BoomAgers

A while ago I ran smack into an infographic produced by NBCUniversal's Curve Report. The report's infographic, analysis and commentary provide an interesting assessment of the 45 million or so members of generation Z.

In case you aren't keeping up with this stuff, gen Z is the generation of Americans born from 2005 to present. In a business where everyone is looking to hop on the next fast growth trend first, this report is telling marketers to think young—and boy do they mean young.

Is generation Z really the "next generation that matters to marketers?" If Z is the future, then I have clearly lost track of the fundamental ABCs of marketing.

The future is already here and it is the "Age of Aging." No other trend, and no other generation, is more important than "The Most Valuable Generation"—the nearly 80 million baby boomers born between 1946 and 1964.

In a thought leadership report that BoomAgers coreleased with Nielsen last year, we documented the unprecedented wealth, influence and impact of this generation and debunked most of the supposed mythology that's been promulgated about older consumers. Unlike the older consumers from previous generations, boomers are far from "stuck in their ways." In fact, they embrace new products, new technologies and new media channels with all the vigor of their compatriots in generations X, Y and Z.

The bottom line is that the risks inherent in ignoring the future potential of the baby boomers are considerable. To my mind, this constitutes the next great "emerging market."

What enormous percentage of U.S. discretionary spending is currently controlled by baby boomers? And what compelling reasons does Hubbell suggest for why it's more important to target them than generation Z, at least for now?

TOMORROW'S BIG RATINGS STORIES TODAY
Parental Guidance Suggested From This Bravo Series?
A new Bravo reality series premiering on Thursday night at 9:30 p.m., Extreme Guide to Parenting, focuses on several different families who are into out-of-the-mainstream-type parenting. There's an "eco-kosher" family that insists their kids eat only natural foods that come from the earth. There's a family with two gay men raising their young adopted daughter and never leaving her side. And there's a family of nomads, a family into "push parenting" and another raising "warrior children" who are aggressive but are also taught to accept punishment without complaint. The upshot: This series about "unique families" and their "unconventional parenting styles," as Bravo describes them, is sure to get the network some notoriety in the press. In fact, it has already. But that is always good for boosting viewership.

Dynamic Duo Featured in New IFC Comedy
Riki Lindhome and Kate Micucci star in Garfunkel and Oates, which follows the duo in their musical comedy alter egos. The comedy premieres on IFC Thursday night at 10:30. Lindhome and Micucci are actresses who also are popular on the improvisational comedy circuit. They started a band, naming it after famous back-half singers Art Garfunkel and John Oates, and this series follows them as they perform, go on auditions and pontificate about their lives. The eight-episode season was created by the duo and is directed by Fred Savage, the onetime star of The Wonder Years. The upshot: IFC has a few established, offbeat comedies, including Portlandia. Perhaps IFC viewers will be ready for Garfunkel and Oates as well.

Controversial 'Black Jesus' Joins Adult Swim Lineup
A new scripted comedy from The Boondocks creator Aaron McGruder, Black Jesus, premieres on Adult Swim on Thursday night at 11 p.m. The series follows a black man living in Compton, Calif., who, along with a small group of followers, does good for his local neighborhood and believes he might be Jesus. A trailer released by the network has some obscene language and the series has triggered lots of criticism from Christian groups. One Million Moms, a unit of the American Family Association, has called the series "blasphemous" and the Christian Network has launched a petition drive to try to prevent it from airing. Some reviewers have praised the series for being clever and different. The upshot: Usually, the more controversy, the more viewers, and McGruder is no stranger when it comes to the controversial. His animated series The Boondocks generated plenty of chatter when it first aired on Adult Swim.
