Google has an idea: build a new video conferencing system. At least that's what Google VP of Product Management Caesar Sengupta announced in Mountain View this morning. It's called Chromebox for meetings and, well, it's a Chromebox bundle designed to outfit meeting rooms with a robust, easy-to-use meeting solution powered by the Google Cloud. More» Why This Matters: This is a pretty extensive look at this $999 cloud-based "enterprise class" videoconferencing idea from Google. Here's more from Ars Technica. –Cynthia Wisehart | | | #2 | A holodeck video game designed to train soldiers | | | by Allen McDuffee, Wired Danger Room | | | Last week, the Army Contracting Command issued a Sources Sought notice for companies interested in demonstrating "mature technologies" for military training. More» Why This Matters: Commercial, off-the-shelf hardware combined with gaming technology delivers a 360 degree immersive training system provides users with a high-fidelity immersive environment. –Cynthia Wisehart | | | #3 | Beep wants to take on Sonos by bringing HTML5 apps to your speakers | | | by Janko Roettgers, GigaOm | | | The whole-home audio market just got one more competitor: San Francisco-based consumer electronics startup Beep officially unveiled its first hardware product Thursday. The device, simply called Beep as well, is an audio adapter that turns any stereo system into a set of connected speakers capable of streaming music from the cloud. Combine multiple units in your house, and your music will automatically play synchronized. More » Why This Matters: This is interesting in terms of industrial design (clickwheel interface) and infrastructure (HTML5 based). It's also interesting as a business plan since the creators (former members of the Google Android team) want to be at the forefront of standards-based whole house audio and eventually work with speaker manufacturers to integrate their apps (and maybe their hardware) into speakers. It's residential-focused, but it's possible to see how HTML5 apps could be practical for some commercial applications. And I like the way the clickwheel looks (who knows how it feels). –Cynthia Wisehart |
