| Today's Top Stories | | #1 | eBay debuts shoppable touchscreens and digital storefronts for Sony, Ton's and Rebecca Minkoff in San Francisco | | | by Leena Rao and Sarah Perez, Tech Crunch | | | eBay is debuting a number of new, connected digital storefronts for shoppers today at the Westfield Mall in San Francisco. Similar to the marketplace giant's shoppable windows in New York, this new partnership melds connected glass, mobile technology and digital payments to give Sony, TOMS and Rebecca Minkoff shoppers the ability to buy from these digital storefronts in the Westfield San Francisco Centre. More» Why This Matters: AV plays a direct role in commerce—not just a supporting role. And it's cool, edgy, trendy commerce. Customers who shop from the beautiful catalog-in-a-touchscreen can arrange for home delivery or—in the case of Sony purchases--walk into the mall, go to the Sony store and get their merchandise. There's audio, and of course metrics. Still, one reason to brave the mall is for a tactile experience of the goods. I would think this approach would work better at a bus stop. -Cynthia Wisehart | | | #2 | InTouch tech allows files to be transferred between devices with a touch | | | by Francis X Govers III, Gizmag | | | How many mobile electronic devices to you have now? The inTouch technology developed by researchers from the VTT Research Center of Finland lets a ring, bracelet, or even a smart fingernail act as a conduit to transfer information between devices simply and securely – even when the devices are owned by different people. More» Why This Matters: This is pretty fascinating. You are basically wearing the memory on your wrist, ring, fingernail and transferring it via RFID. -Cynthia Wisehart | | | #3 | Windows 1.0, the flop that created an empire | | | by Charles Cooper, CNET | | | Two years later than planned, Microsoft's new graphical operating system went on sale November 20, 1985. It wasn't worth the wait. But a bigger story was soon to unfold. More» Why This Matters: 28 years ago today. -Cynthia Wisehart |
