| | Media Buyer & Planner Today | | | | | | | | | #1 Advertisers Boycott Hannity | | A group of brands over the weekend said they will remove their ads or avoid advertising in the future on Fox News Channel's Sean Hannity show. The boycott is being encouraged by liberal watchdog group Media Matters and comes following Hannity's on-air defense of Alabama Republican U.S. Senate candidate Roy Moore, who the Washington Post has reported allegedly had sexual contact with a 14-year old girl when he was in his 30s, and also pursued other teenage girls. Moore also appeared on Hannity's show to defend himself. Among the brands pulling ads or planning to boycott include coffee machine maker Keurig, Nature's Bounty, E*Trade, Eloquii and 23andMe. Realtor.com initially issued a tweet saying it planned to boycott, but later said that was not the case. Meanwhile, Hannity followers and supporters of Moore have started a boycott of Keurig products with several taking to Twitter with videos showing them smashing Keurig coffeemakers. | | WHY THIS MATTERS: This is not the first time that a Fox News show has faced advertiser boycotts. Earlier this year, then Fox News show host Bill O'Reilly, facing charges himself of sexual harassment, saw his show lose numerous advertisers until the network ultimately fired him. Brands today are very sensitive about the environment in which their products are advertised in. And if a show has any type of controversy related to it, brands are not hesitant to pull their ads out or to not advertise. | | | | #2 'SportsCenter' Launches on Snapchat | | Cable sports network ESPN beginning Monday is debuting a new short-form version of its SportsCenter show on Snapchat. The show will be available twice a day, at 5 a.m. and at 5 p.m. on weekdays and once at 5 a.m. on weekends. The show will be three-to-five minutes in length, made up of sports news, highlights and commentary. Katie Nolan, who recently joined ESPN from Fox Sports, will be the initial host, but other ESPN personalities will host future shows. According to Ad Age, ESPN will sell ads in SportsCenter and will share the revenue with Snapchat. | | WHY THIS MATTERS: As Broadcasting & Cable reports, the deal with Snapchat is part of ESPN's effort to push SportsCenter online. Ratings for the TV version have been falling, particularly among younger viewers, who usually go online to find scores and highlights. So this move makes sense for ESPN. And as is always the case when a TV show moves to a social platform and accepts advertising, it gives brands another outlet for them to reach potential consumers. | | | | #3 Best Places to Work List Devoid of Large Agencies | | Ad Age, in conjunction with Best Companies Group, has compiled a list of the Top 50 marketing, media and advertising workplaces that employees would enjoy working at. They range in size from 9 to up to 200 employees, and all seem to offer employee-friendly perks. Among them, allowing workers to bring in their pets, free lunches from fast food restaurants, free booze, birthday presents and gifts to new parents from the company, free fitness club memberships, and on and on. Missing are the larger agencies or offices with lots and lots of employees. Top of the list is Denver-based ad tech company Choozie which has 275 clients and 58 employees. Others among the Top 10 are digital influencer marketing agency Cogent Entertainment Marketing; digital performance marketing agency House of Kaizen; digital marketing agency Path Interactive; Fort Work-based digital marketing agency PMG; digital marketers Be Found Online and Elite SEM; Hanapin Marketing of Bloomington, Ind.; and independent creative shop Young & Laramore. Brand agency Figliulo & Partners is No. 12. | | WHY THIS MATTERS: It's a fun list and in reality, while some of the perks are feasible for agencies of all sizes to offer their workers, some just aren't practical. It's easier to feed 50 employees than 500. And easier to let pets roam around an office of 50, as opposed to an office of 500. NBC rolled to a big win in Sunday prime, riding Sunday Night Football to a 4.3 rating in viewers 18-49, per the Nielsen overnights, and a 15 share. Second was Fox at 2.3/7. Football Night in America did a flat 3.1 on NBC and the game, Patriots versus Broncos, a 5.0. The game was up 25%. Fox had an NFL overrun, then The OT at 3.0. The Simpsons grew 46% to 1.9 and Ghosted went up 30% to 1.3, then Family Guy elevated 40% to 1.4 while Last Man on Earth went up 13% to 0.9. CBS had a 0.9/3. 60 Minutes rated a 1.2 after last week's NFL-boosted 2.4. Wisdom of the Crowd fell 27% to 0.8. NCIS: Los Angeles did a flat 0.9 and Madam Secretary a flat 0.6. ABC was at 0.8/3. Toy Box grew 25% to 0.5 and America's Funniest Home Videos grew 11% to 1.0. Shark Tank did a flat 0.9 in its first hour and was up 14% at 0.8 in its second hour.
