Top Stories - Aug. 15, 2016 TPG Capital Puts Up $2.25B for RCN and Grande Communications It's official: Private equity fund TPG Capital announced Monday it will buy RCN Telecommunications and Grande Communications for $2.25 billion.  more WHY THIS MATTERS: TPG is acquiring the two operators from ABRY Partners via separate transactions and plans to combine the assets to create a top 10 U.S. cable operator. North America Leads Gigabit Deployments: Study More than 500 operational or planned gigabit Internet services have been deployed in North America, with about 234 underway in the United States, test and measurement specialist Viavi found in a new Gigabit Monitor that will keep a running tab on those totals. more WHY THIS MATTERS: Viavi tallied at least 350 "live" gigabit deployments on a global basis, with another 164 announced or underway using a mix of technologies; by region, North America has the largest share of deployments, at 61%, followed by Europe at 24%. Virgin Media Unleashes Next-Gen TiVo Update Virgin Media, the U.K.'s largest cable operator, has launched an update for its TiVo-powered platform that enhances a customer's ability to search for and save TV shows and movies. more WHY THIS MATTERS: Among the additions is Series Link+, which lets customers assemble TV shows they like in one place, including shows from live TV, VOD or OTT services such as Netflix and BBC iPlayer.
