Top Stories - Aug. 3, 2016 Report: Sinclair Interested in Buying The Weather Channel Sinclair Broadcast Group has expressed interest in purchasing The Weather Channel from private equity groups Bain Capital and Blackstone Group, and could pony up as much as $100 million in a deal, according to reports.  more WHY THIS MATTERS: Currently in about 90 million homes, The Weather Channel has been a target for distributors looking to cut costs -- and has been the subject of blackouts and drops over the past few years. NBC Olympics to Offer Temporary Streaming Pass for Rio NBC Olympics outlined plans to stream more than 4,500 hours of coverage during the Summer Games in Rio, including offering a limited temporary pass to consumers without a pay TV subscription. more WHY THIS MATTERS: NBC Olympics noted that, for the first time, it will stream coverage of all nine NBCU Olympic networks (broadcast nets NBC and Telemundo; and cable channels Bravo, CNBC, Golf Channel, MSNBC, NBC Sports Network, NBC Universo and USA Network) and will support authenticated access on connected devices. Sources: FCC Working on Indie Program-Access Rules It looks as though the FCC could issue new rules on access to independent programming after all, or at least a proposal to adopt them, with chairman Tom Wheeler and commissioner Mignon Clyburn working on a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking, according to multiple sources. more WHY THIS MATTERS: The rulemaking stems from a Notice of Inquiry launched earlier this year at Clyburn's request to explore program diversity and possible ways to address complaints that cable operators and other multichannel video programming distributors might be stifling competition.
