At the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) held this past Sunday at Madison Square Garden in New York City, Firehouse Productions employed Clear-Com's FreeSpeak II digital wireless intercom for the first time to connect the live production crew.
By Clive Young Back in the early days of punk rock, FOH engineers had to make sure the console didn't get hit by The Three Bs: Beers, Bodies and Blood. Today, that doesn't happen as much—is it because punk audiences are better behaved now? Heck no! It's 'cause the crowd is too busy holding iPhones in the air, blocking everyone's view—including the FOH engineer's. If you can't see the stage from the mix position thanks to the forest of outstretched arms, here's one of the original punkers—Marky Ramone himself—with a very DIY solution.
"I've got two high-end engineers [Richard Sharratt and Howard Page] that have very good ears. They have totally different styles as far as how they are driving their consoles. So we've come up with a really good, happy medium.
