| | Comcast's NBC broadcasting unit saw retransmission-consent revenue climb 63.5% in the second quarter, but that haul could get even larger as new deals come up on the horizon, NBCUniversal CEO Steve Burke told analysts Wednesday. more | WHY THIS MATTERS: Burke, on a conference call to discuss parent Comcast's Q2 results, said despite some significant growth over the past five years, the programmer still has "some major contracts where retrans is going to take significant step-ups." | | Roberts: 'OTT Economics Are Unproven to Us' | | Despite the rise of virtual MVPDs that can deliver services nationwide by going over-the-top, Comcast still believes that the most prudent business path is to grow its video sub base in-footprint. more | | WHY THIS MATTERS: On the company's Q2 earnings call, Comcast chairman/CEO Brian Roberts echoed sentiments he shared in May at the INTX show, saying, "[F]or now our in-market footprint strategy is where we add the most value to consumers." | | CTIA Seeking Full Court Review of Title II Decision | | CTIA: The Wireless Association, which represents wireless ISPs, will seek a full-court rehearing of the three-judge panel decision upholding the FCC's Open Internet order reclassifying fixed and mobile broadband as telecommunications services subject to Title II common-carrier regs, according to a source familiar with the group's plans. more | | WHY THIS MATTERS: CTIA will focus on the wireless portion of that decision, arguing that mobile broadband is qualitatively different from fixed, something the FCC has previously acknowledged, and requires "far more complex and aggressive network management than fixed broadband," which is why the FCC should not have applied the same regulations to both. |
