Top Stories - June 24, 2016 Cable Ops: We Can, Are Doing Better on Customer Service Cable and satellite operators got a trip to the woodshed Thursday at a Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations hearing on MVPD customer service issues and billing practices.  more WHY THIS MATTERS: In concert with the hearing, at which executives from all the major MVPDs testified, the subcommittee issued a joint report concluding that Charter and Time Warner Cable had failed to reimburse customers for overcharges to the tune of millions of dollars, related primarily to extra set-top box fees, but that the more than six years' worth of MVPD data provided to the subcommittee showed the MSOs have made efforts to address the problems. BitTorrent Broadens Its Video Play Diving deeper into video services, BitTorrent has renamed its Bundle video platform BitTorrent Now alongside a plan to add apps for mobile devices and connected TV platforms. more WHY THIS MATTERS: Possibly enhancing its competitive positioning with content makers that use platforms such as YouTube and Vessel, BitTorrent Now is also adding an ad-supported streaming option for publishers under a revenue-sharing model. Comcast, Alarm.com Divvy Up Icontrol Networks In a move that shakes up the home security and automation market, Comcast and Alarm.com said they have struck agreements to buy different pieces of Icontrol. more WHY THIS MATTERS: Comcast is in line to buy Icontrol's Austin division, which built the platform powering the Xfinity Home security and automation service as well as similar services from Cox Communications, Rogers Communications and Bell Aliant.
