| | The other big cable deal this year after Charter-TWC -- Altice N.V.'s $17.7 billion purchase of Cablevision Systems -- appears headed for a June finish, following the New York Public Service Commission's statement that the deal would be in the public interest if its conditions are met. more | WHY THIS MATTERS: The New York Public Service Commission, the regulatory body for Cablevision's largest market, took a hard look at the deal over the past several months after earlier expressing concern about the $900 million in expected synergies Altice intends to extract over time from Cablevision, fearing they could mean massive layoffs and a precipitous drop in customer service.

| | Charter Taps Michael Bair to Head Programming Nets | | Charter Communications has tapped long-time programming executive Michael Bair to lead the company's news and sports channels, including three Los Angeles-area regional sports networks, acquired by merging with Time Warner Cable, sources confirmed Tuesday. more | | WHY THIS MATTERS: A big task for Bair will be to find a way to get TWC SportsNet widely distributed, beyond existing deals with TWC, Bright House Networks and Charter, which are all part of the same company now. |
| | Comcast: Set-Top Box Proposal Fails on All Counts | | In comments filed with the FCC, Comcast said the agency's set-top box proposal "disregards copyright protections and licensing agreements; threatens to halt the unbridled innovation that has permeated the video marketplace for years; requires new in-home equipment; and strips consumers of privacy protections and legal remedies." more | | WHY THIS MATTERS: Comcast argued that the only parties backing the FCC proposal are the same groups that backed the 2010 AllVid proposal and companies that will reap a windfall by not having to follow the same rules as MVPDs, and called the plan an unnecessary and costly technology mandate that would likely be obsolete before it could even be implemented. |
