Top Stories - April 5, 2016 Cord Cutting Grew Four-Fold in 2015  Some 1.13 million U.S. TV households cut the cord in 2015, about four times 2014's pace, with another 1.11 million expected to cancel their pay TV subscriptions in 2016 as over-the-top and mobile services continue to grow, according to Canadian research company Convergence Consulting Group.  more WHY THIS MATTERS: In its annual research report – "The Battle for the North American Couch Potato" – Convergence said that although pay TV revenue rose 3% in 2015, to $105 billion, and should increase another 2% to $107 billion in 2016, it was far below the pace of OTT services. Convergence estimated that OTT revenue increased 29% to $5.1 billion in 2015, and predicted it would grow another 20%, to $6.1 billion, in 2016. No Game, No Talks Between YES, Comcast As dark clouds surrounded the New York area Monday, postponing the New York Yankees Opening Day game with the Houston Astros until Tuesday (April 5), hopes were even dimmer that the extra day could help unlock the impasse in negotiations between Comcast and YES Network, the regional sports network that carries the games. more WHY THIS MATTERS: YES and Comcast have been embroiled in a carriage dispute since November, and the imbroglio is mirrored on the West Coast as operators other than Time Warner Cable, Charter Communications and Bright House Networks (all expected to merge shortly) have passed at carrying SportsNet LA, the RSN that airs the Los Angeles Dodgers. Nielsen, Dish Sign Pact for Set-Top Data Dish Network has agreed to provide its national and local set-top box data to Nielsen for use in the measurement company's Total Audience strategy. more WHY THIS MATTERS: The deal comes on the heels of a similar agreement the satellite TV company reached earlier with Nielsen rival comScore.
