Top Stories - March 24, 2016 House Dems Back Charter-TWC In a letter to the Federal Communications Commission and the Justice Department, four Democratic House members from diverse regions have weighed in in support of the Charter Communications-Time Warner Cable merger.  more WHY THIS MATTERS: With the FCC's 180-day "shot clock" winding down and approval of the merger expected as soon as later this week, top Democrats are urging the FCC to scrutinize the deal carefully, but credit Charter for its commitments to diversity, job creation and offering high-speed Internet to low-income communities. CDD Offers FCC Fodder for Data-Collection Rules The Center for Digital Democracy said it will present FCC chairman Tom Wheeler with a copy of a new report looking at data collection by Internet-service providers and others — Google for one — to try and help guide the FCC's proposed rulemaking on a broadband privacy protection framework. more WHY THIS MATTERS: Data offered up by the CDD could influence the FCC's regulatory approach to the authority it has gained over ISP broadband customer proprietary network information (CPNI) under Title II; it's set to vote on such an approach March 31. Nielsen Adds Info on Connected-TV Devices Nielsen will make the data it has about connected-TV devices available to clients effective April 25. more WHY THIS MATTERS: Nielsen has been moving to broaden the amount of viewing information it collects on all screens and devices in a bid to help its media and advertising clients measure how TV audience habits are shifting.
