MCN Newswire: Cablevision's Capex a Concern for Altice; Redstone Called a 'Living Ghost'; Tech Toys Top Thanksgiving Shopping Frenzy

Top Stories - Nov. 30, 2015
AGENDA: Cablevision Capex Could Crimp Altice Cuts SUBSCRIBER EXCLUSIVE
European telecom giant Altice's plans to squeeze $900 million in cost synergies from Cablevision Systems hit a bit of a speed bump after the U.S. cable operator released a financial forecast that calls for a nearly 4% rise in capital expenditures over the next four years.  more
WHY THIS MATTERS: Analysts and investors have been skeptical about synergies Altice chairman Patrick Drahi has said he could achieve from the $17.7 billion acquisition, so the biggest surprise in Cablevision's proxy filing came on the capital expenditures line, where the MSO estimated capex would increase 3.6% from $908 million in 2016 to $941 million in 2019.

Redstone Lawyers Dispute Incompetency Claims
Lawyers for Viacom and CBS chairman Sumner Redstone fired back at claims that he is unaware of his surroundings and unable to make basic decisions about his personal care, claiming the media mogul is as mentally sharp and opinionated as ever, after former companion and self-described caregiver Manuela Herzer painted a disturbing picture of the media boss in a filing in Los Angeles County Court Nov. 24. more
WHY THIS MATTERS: Herzer's description of Redstone as becoming "a living ghost" after his former girlfriend, 50-year-old Sydney Holland, left him in August exacerbated concerns that have arisen about the 92-year-old Redstone's health as the chairman has stepped away from participating in quarterly earnings conference calls and missed both Viacom's and CBS's annual shareholder's meetings this year.

CTA: Tech Runs Hot During Thanksgiving Shopping Week
Smartphones, TVs and tablets topped shopping lists as about 59.9 million Americans bought or planned to buy technology products over the Thanksgiving shopping week, Nov. 23 through today, "Cyber Monday," according to the Consumer Technology Association. more
WHY THIS MATTERS: While the final tally is still out, the recently rechristened CEA also expects laptops, videogame consoles and digital media streaming devices to rank in the Top 10, all corresponding to the increased growth in mobile streaming, connected devices and TV everywhere apps.
