| Today's Top Stories | | #1 | Western Union Films Ads in Cuba
| | | The company is pushing money transfers to Cuba in a new series of TV spots produced on the island, Ad Age reports. Two Spanish-language ads are among the first to be filmed in Cuba by an American-based company since the 1962 U.S. embargo. The ads show Americans real people in Cuba who have received funds through its service. The ads were produced by Western Union's lead Hispanic agency Bromley Communications. Why This Matters: "Cuba is an important market for us," says Laston Charriez, senior VP-marketing, Americas, at Western Union. "We wanted to be there first and make it relevant and breakthrough." Expect other brands and their agencies to follow. A Take: Ad Age

| | #2 | Hispanic Agency Bromley Communications Closing
| | | After 34 years, the agency's chairman and CEO Ernest Bromley will shut it down, Ad Age reports. The agency is 100% owned by Publicis Groupe and has about 40 employees. Bromley ranks 22nd among Hispanic agencies with an estimated revenue of less than $10 million. Much of the agency's revenue comes from a group of General Mills brands. The agency also handles Hispanic advertising for the NBA and Enterprise Holdings. Why This Matters: Bromley just broke a major campaign for Western Union with a series of ads shot in Cuba, but overall it has just been dwarfed by the growth of large Hispanic agencies both independent and part of general market holding companies. Several agencies are expected to pick up Bromley's clients. A Take: Ad Age

| | #3 | Fox Garners $40M in Ad Revenue from World Cup Telecasts
| | | The $40 million figure is higher than the 2011 World Cup ad take by ESPN, which totaled $6 million, but nowhere near the 2014 Men's World Cup ad revenue, which reached $529 million for ESPN/ABC. About 50 advertisers appeared in the Women's World Cup telecasts across Fox broadcast and cable networks. Among the largest were Anheuser-Busch, Nationwide and Fiat. Why This Matters: Fox held back some inventory banking on the U.S. Women's team reaching the final match, and it paid off. Fox reportedly sold 30-second spots for the final match at $500,000 and took in $12 million from the final match telecast alone. Three Takes: WSJ | Adweek | Media Life |

| | THIS WEEKEND'S BIG RATINGS STORIES TODAY | 'Basketball Wives: LA' Back in Action Series creator Shaunie O'Neal, ex-wife of Shaquille O'Neal, joins the cast of Basketball Wives: LA for season 4, which premieres Sunday night at 8 p.m. on VH1. She previously appeared in a few seasons of the original Basketball Wives. Expect more scandals and backstabbing this season, but one thing is certain: This series has a solid following and has grown its audience each year. The series premiered averaging 1.7 million viewers in season 1 and last season averaged 2 million with a 1.0 18-49 demo rating. The demo rating made it one of the most-watched series on Monday nights during season 3. The upshot: VH1 is moving it to Sunday night but the move should not have much impact. The Basketball Wives: LA audience is certain to follow it to its new night. |
| 'The Strain' Rejoins FX Lineup Sci-fi series The Strain debuts its second season on Sunday night at 10. As the new season begins, New York City is rapidly being overtaken by an evil epidemic and as doctors try to combat it, they must also deal with new breeds of bloodthirsty creatures hampering their efforts. The series is based on a vampire novel trilogy by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan. The upshot: The Strain was one of Sunday night's most-watched series, both in total viewers and among those 18-49. It averaged a 1.0 demo rating and 2.2 million viewers after premiering with a 1.2 in the demo and 3 million viewers. FX has been devoting lots of promotional dollars to the premiere of season 2, so expect a strong viewership for the opening episode.
|
| Supersized 'Naked and Afraid' More contestants spend more time in the wild in Discovery's Naked and Afraid XL, which premieres Sunday night at 10. XL is an extra large version of reality series Naked and Afraid, which recently concluded its fourth season averaging a 1.0 18-49 demo rating and 2.3 million viewers per episode. In Naked and Afraid, two survivalists who meet for the first time are given the task of surviving in the wilderness for 21 days with no food, water, shelter or clothing. Naked and Afraid XL will place 12 strangers six men and six women together in the Colombian jungle for 40 days with none of the amenities. Whoever best survives is the winner. The upshot: The original series has drawn solid viewership in this same time period on Sunday nights, so the supersized version should do at least equally well. |
