Today's Top Stories | #1 | You Tube releases 8K video but good luck watching it | | By David Murphy, PC Mag | | YouTube fans with not-so-insignificant computers can now watch movies in twice the resolution of the already-large 4K. More» Why This Matters: The clip is called Ghost Towns, this story tells you pretty much what you need to know in the still-slippery world of "8K." It was reportedly shot on a RED Epic Dragon 6K camera in portrait mode and then stitched by Adobe After Effects or directly upscaled to 8K resolution from 6K. I've read both. This is also a good time to remind ourselves of some of the 8K spec numbers. -Cynthia Wisehart | | #2 | Doppler Labs introduces "Bionic Ears" that can control live sound experience | | By Carolyn Giardina, The Hollywood Reporter | | These are not like earphones in that they are not designed for music playback, nor are they designed to compete with noise-cancelling headphones (though there can be some overlap) or as a replacement for a hearing aid. Rather, the idea is to let the user effectively make a personal "mix" of whatever he or she is hearing, such as a live concert. The system uses signal processing algorithms that target specific frequency ranges so that you can isolate and control a given sound as it enters your ears. More» Why This Matters: Tools include volume control; an equalizer to adjust bass, mids or treble; sound effects such as reverb and echo; and preset filters. The example is you can tune down the crying baby on the plane or tune up the base at a concert. The companywhich has investors including film score powerhouse Hans Zimmer and Quincy Jones--claims the mix occurs in real time with no perceivable latency. Can't Dan Dugan already do this? Cynthia Wisehart | | #3 | Indiegogo Patrol: The One Smart Piano teaches you to play using an iPad | | By Jacob Kastrenakes, The Verge | | Both of The One's keyboards teach piano using light-up keys, which you can already find on existing MIDI keyboards and piano accessories. (There's also plenty of debate around how effective they are as a teaching tool.) But The One takes the concept a bit further. Rather than just running through songs, its keyboards are able to stop at each note and wait for you to play it correctly. More» Why This Matters: This sounds like something 700,000 Chinese people would buy (which they did). Now the idea is to expand the market to the US. Perhaps the most interesting thing is that the company is crowdfunding the expansion so that they can ship the keyboards in bulk once they build up a critical mass of orders. -Cynthia Wisehart |
