| Today's Top Stories | | #1 | High tech shutter could help turn your windows into LCD displays | | | By Dario Borghino, Gizmag | | | Researchers at the Pusan National University in South Korea have developed an advanced light shutter that can rapidly switch between transparency and opaqueness in less than a millisecond, paving the way for displays that become see-through at the flick of a switch. More» Why This Matters: This is another in the lab-level advancements in transparent displays. Certainly the ability to multi-task a window as a display has almost immeasurable potential, so we're following along with progress. -Cynthia Wisehart | | | #2 | Telesurgery tests highlight the limits of the Internet | | | By Mona Lalwani, Engadget | | | The use of robotics in surgeries has been successful, as long as the operator and the device are in the same OR. But putting distance between the two has been problematic. The whole process relies on a strong network or Internet for connectivity, which invariably results in some amount of latency. Even the slightest lag can have serious implications. More» Why This Matters: Obvious. The story is about a $4.9 DOD grant that was used to look at the distances that can safely be supported over "short distances" by "a well-equipped hospital." Those variables were not defined in the article. But interestingly the tolerable latency was: 200 milliseconds delay apparently did not affect the accuracy of the 107 participating surgeons; 300-500 milliseconds delay could be "accommodated" and over 500 milliseconds was considered too risky. -Cynthia Wisehart | | | #3 | World's first underwater store, created by Sony, relies heavily on 3D printed product displays | | | By Brittney Sevenson, 3D Print.com | | | Recently, Sony's creative agency, FP7/DXB built the world's very first underwater store. The store—which was only open for three days—was located off the coast of The World Islands, Dubai. More» Why This Matters: This was actually several months ago, but this is the first story I've seen on the process of making the underwater displays—which relied heavily on 3D printing. Kinda fascinating. -Cynthia Wisehart |
