| Today's Top Stories | | #1 | Kickstarter Patrol: Beam projector screws into any light socket | | | Via InAVate | | | A programmable projector has been launched on crowdfunding site Kickstarter that works with smart phones and tablets. The cylindrical unit boasts a 100 lumens, 12x LED bulb and is equipped with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Called, Beam, owners can use it just about anywhere by screwing into any light bulb socket or hooking up a traditional power cord. Users can also specify particular content to be delivered at a particular time. More» Why This Matters: I usually don't do Kickstarter. But, two things: some kind of device-driven gadget projector is an obvious need and here's an attempt. What also seemed odd/interesting about this projector was that it was programmable and schedule-able for content. So it would seem they are thinking about small-scale digital signage (and/or how to remake Say Anything with a projector instead of a boombox). -Cynthia Wisehart | | | #2 | Master Class: Andrew Scheps on understanding consumer audio formats | | | By Sarah Jones, Electronic Musician | | | Engineer Andrew Scheps is on a mission to bring music and tech communities together for a common understanding of how consumer audio formats impact the listening experience. Learn why these specs are so importantand how you might have more control than you think. More» Why This Matters: You'll enjoy this, especially if you're a fan of the Fraunhofer codec and/or Scheps' work on Lost in Translation. More» Why This Matters: Cook got a lot of flak for his cringeworthy "buy-my-watch-so-you don't-die" pitch. But there's a more interesting underlying debate. Insurance companies are now working with employers on wellness monitoring and data-driven pricing for health insurance--using information such as personal habits, medical choices (or non-choices) and other actuary variables for employee health plans. But what if your worst health habit is your job? Like many companies, Apple is dependent on all-nighters, 60-hour weeks, and skipped meals, weekends, and vacations. Is there an app for that? -Cynthia Wisehart |
