Today's Top Stories | #1 | It's official: FCC approves net neutrality rules; reclassifies broadband as a utility | | By Davinda Hardawar, Engadget | | It's a good day for proponents of an open internet: The Federal Communications Commission just approved its long-awaited network neutrality plan, which reclassifies broadband internet as a Title II public utility and gives the agency more regulatory power in the process. And unlike the FCC's last stab at net neutrality in 2010, today's new rules also apply to mobile broadband. More» Why This Matters: There's going to be a whole lot of "careful what you wish for" in this historic moment. But make no mistake, it's historic and it's the end of an era, for better or worse. The new era is far from settled, but whatever happens next there is no going back, though in the short term there won't be any going forward either; nothing we experience will change for a while. My favorite takeaway is FCC chief Tom Wheeler's statement that he had been wrong in his earlier ruling by relying on "commercial reasonableness" (it is always tricky to rely on an oxymoron). Cynthia Wisehart | | #2 | Prototype display creates holographic style images | | Via InAVate | | A prototype 3D display will be unveiled which could enable mobile devices to create holographic-style images that float above the screen. Leia will unveil its prototype at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona between March 1-5. The device works using what it calls a multiview display which consists of a very thin piece of transparent material that is illuminated from the side using standard LEDs. More» Why This Matters: Holograms are a form of 3D that I think really will have a future, but no one has really cracked it yet.
