Today's Top Stories | #1 | The winners and losers in tomorrow's Net Neutrality vote | | By Jason Abbruzzese, Mashable | | We're just a day away from the Federal Communications Commission's vote on major changes to how the regulator handles broadband Internet and the companies behind it. Just about every indication is that the FCC will pass the changes on a 3-2 vote, split per usual between the Democratic majority and Republican minority. A quick reminder: if passed, the proposal would allow the FCC to watch over the broadband industry in a similar fashion to utilities, which are highly regulated. It would also allow the FCC to ensure net neutrality, preventing Internet fast lanes. More» Why This Matters: This is a catchy oversimplification, but whatever. As always, there's no mention of the people who use the Internet as supporting infrastructure for videoconferencing, remote diagnostics, cloud-based services, etc. I guess we're in with the "content" winners because technically we move content for a living, sometimes over the public internet. Fast/slow lanes would have been a nightmare for us. Pundits always focus on the little startup that can't pay to travel over the fast lanes and ends up bypassed and invisible like some diner on the old route 395 to Mammoth. Well, we were even more invisible as stakeholders. So, what's good for content providers is good for usshort term at least. Still, I can't help but be sad that it was decided by big government vs. big market. Someday there will be a third party. It guarantees that a 27-inch display, used at a normal viewing distance of twenty inches, is completely free of visible pixels. 4K can be improved upon. 5K is perfect. But what is it like to use a 5K display every day? The Equil Smartmarker, however, can make sure that's not the case. It can capture whiteboard notes and stream them to computers and mobile devices. More» Why This Matters: This works a bit like the Smart Kapp whiteboard . It looks cool, on first glance anyway. -Cynthia Wisehart |
