Automakers Speed HD Radio Adoption (February) Last February, Leslie Stimson reported on the state of HD Radio adoption, according to her booth visits at the International CES. She reported that Kenwood and Pioneer would expand their lines, and many of those models support HD Radio. In addition, Alpine, JVC, Clarion and Sony also plan HD Radio receivers in 2014.
Field Observations of Elevated FM HD (June) The senior operations engineer for iHeartMedia's Engineering and Systems Integration Group, Alan Jurison, in June told Radio World about what he observed while testing HD Radio in the "real world."
GM Drops HD Radio From Some 2015 Models (August) Leslie Stimson first reported on the car company's decision to remove HD Radio from some 2015 models. The year may have started out well for HD Radio in the digital dash, but some saw this as the beginning of the end for iBiquity's technology.
GM Says It's "Tweaking" HD Radio Implementation (September) GM Manager Engineering & Safety Communications Jennie Ecclestone tells Radio World that "based on customer feedback we had received on our initial HD Radio application, we decided to refine this technology and removed it from some vehicles."
AM Band Digital Field Tests Conclude (October) Listeners noticed the AM all-digital tests in October on Seattle's KRKO and KKXA. These last planned tests were in the largest market so far of the AM all-digital HD Radio technology. They were also the first to include 50 kW stations in a large market, and at a diplexed transmitter site.
How to Save HD Radio (If Someone Wants to Try) (November) Matt Sammon, director of broadcasting and programming for the National Hockey League's Tampa Bay Lightning, says there is still hope for HD Radio. He offers his suggestions for improving HD Radio, while acknowledging there may be some ready to give up on it.
