| | | Jim Parsons—genius nerd Sheldon Cooper on the CBS hit comedy—has been recruited to star in TV, YouTube and social media campaign where he'll tout—as himself, not as his TV character—Intel as a tech innovator. The campaign is the first work for Intel's new worldwide creative agency mcgarrybowen. The goal of the campaign, according to Intel chief marketing officer Steve Fund, is to "revitalize the brand." Why This Matters: Mcgarybowen considered more than 60 celebrities before selecting Parsons, according to an Adweek report. Parsons joins a growing list of openly gay, lesbian and transgender performers who are touting brands. Among the others: Neil Patrick Harris, Ellen DeGeneres and Laverne Cox. | | #2 | Google To Offer Subscribers Paid, Ad-Free Sites
| | | The new service called Google Contributor will offer users access to publishing sites for a fee of between $1 and $3 per month where they can see content without any advertising. Google will share the subscription revenue with the sites. Initially Google will test the concept with a limited number of publishers that includes Mashable, The Onion, ScienceDaily and Urban Dictionary. Why This Matters: The new project has raised eyebrows because Google is the world's largest digital ad seller and on these sites will give people the option of eliminating them. However, Jason Kint, CEO of Digital Content Next, a trade group representing digital media companies, tells Digiday, "It's a positive development, as long as it's a fairly negotiated arrangement between Google and the publishers." | | #3 | ANA CEO Says Ad Industry Must Work Together On Viewability, Fraud Issues
| | | Bob Liodice, in a first-person article in Ad Age says while some progress has been made, there is so much to accomplish and it is "imperative that the industry gain its footing and push back aggressively and successfully against the forces that are promoting fraud." Why This Matters: There are all sorts of initiatives under way involving industry trade groups such as ANA, the 4As and the Interactive Advertising Bureau, but the actions of these initiatives have to speak louder than words. Forming committees and holding discussions will not solve these industry-wide problems. A Take: Ad Age |

| | MBPT Spotlight | ABC Primetime Offers A Clue To African-American Viewing Patterns By John Consoli Last season on Thursday night, ABC averaged a cumulative 20.8 million viewers and a 2.2 18-49 demo rating for its three hour-long dramas, according to Nielsen data. This season, the network is averaging a cumulative 29.5 million viewers and a 3.0 demo rating.
On Wednesday night at 9:30 last season, ABC averaged a cumulative 4.6 million viewers and a 1.6 demo rating for two series that aired in the time period. This season-to-date, the network is averaging 8.2 million viewers and a 2.7 demo rating in the time period.
The difference—freshman drama How To Get Away with Murder on Thursday night with black lead actress Viola Davis and freshman comedy Black-ish with an ensemble African-American cast led by Anthony Anderson on Wednesday night. Those two series this season are the second- and third-most-watched in broadcast primetime shows among African-American viewers, behind No. 1 Scandal, the veteran drama starring Kerry Washington.
Media agency Carat put together an African-American viewer index for broadcast network programming based on adult 18-49 demo ratings and the results are a bit of an eye-opener. Not surprisingly, the most-watched shows by African-American viewers are those which have either black male or female lead characters or those with ensemble casts that have African-Americans in major roles. The surprise, however, comes with the series at the absolute bottom of the African-American index—the most-watched comedy and second-most-watched series on broadcast television, The Big Bang Theory on CBS.
What do the statistics say about viewers tuning into series that have a prominent African-American cast member? And what series make up the top—and bottom—of the lists among African-American viewers? For more, click HERE

| | THIS WEEKEND'S BIG RATINGS STORIES TODAY | • Nat Geo Fills Up On 'The Story of Food' National Geographic Channel premieres the six-hour, three-night miniseries Eat: The Story of Food beginning with back-to-back episodes on Friday at 9 p.m. that the network promises will satisfy every question viewers have had about the evolution of food "over the course of humankind, from our ancestors throwing raw meat on a fire for the first time, to teams of lab technicians perfecting the crunch of a potato chip." Two more episodes will air on Saturday night and two more Sunday night, all between 9 and 11. The upshot: The series will also air internationally on Nat Geo channels in 440 million homes in 171 countries and in 45 languages, as well as on its Spanish-language network Nat Geo Mundo. |
| • The Rating Points Do Matter On 'Whose Line' Improv comedy series Whose Line Is It Anyway? concludes its second season on The CW network tonight at 8 p.m. The resurrected series began a 24-episode run on The CW in March and has averaged 1.6 million viewers and a 0.5 18-49 demo rating, making it one of the most watched series on the network. The upshot: The series has already been renewed for a third season on The CW which will be its 11th overall. It has a median-age audience of 45, which is younger than when it used to air on ABC, so The CW audience has embraced it.

| • ABC Plays On With 'American Music Awards' The annual AMAs (Sunday 8 p.m.) features Pitbull returning as host, with other performers including Taylor Swift, Mary J. Blige, 5 Seconds of Summer, Iggy Azalea, Fergie and One Direction. For the sixth consecutive year, there will be a live online preshow beginning at 5 p.m. The upshot: Last year's TV telecast drew 12.9 million viewers and a 4.5 18-49 demo rating, up significantly from the 9.5 million and 3.4 demo rating that the 2012 telecast drew. Always hampering the potential size of the viewing audience: It airs head-to-head with NBC's Sunday Night Football, which draws around 19 million viewers, although the AMA audience is more female than male. |
