Today's Top Stories | #1 | Android Void: The most popular OS has no Pro Audio applications | | By Strother Bullins, Pro Audio Review | | While pro audio is respectably monogamous to iOSit's first-love mobile platformthe world overwhelmingly runs with Android. Worldwide, Android accounts for 84.7 percent of smartphones and at least 60 percent of tablets, and rising. Android OSwith thousands of available app optionscurrently offers no reasonable tools for its users who may want to, for example, use their tables to capture multi-microphone/multi-track performance sessions, record overdubs, effect/edit tracks, mix and distribute audio productions without horribly bad I/O latency. More» Why This Matters: And yet, there is a raft of iOS apps that do all these pro audio functions and more. Hmmm. Have a look at my colleague Strother Bullins upon his soapbox and think about what it means for BYOD in ProAV. Cynthia Wisehart | | #2 | Sennheiser encourages microphone owners to petition to the FCC in light of impending UHF spectrum auction | | Via SVC Online | | Company says FCC should retain two blocks of clean UHF for hypercritical mics and ear monitors, and mic owners should receive compensation as a result of spectrum repacking. More» Why This Matters: Sennheiser has filed a new Petition for Reconsideration in this issue. As we've pointed out before, it's not so easy to make comments directly to the FCC. If, after reading the article you want to get involved, Sennheiser is offering to file lettersso that means you would just have to write the letter, and not figure out the FCC labyrinth. Here's Sennheiser's page if you want to do that. Cynthia Wisehart | | #3 | A real Apple TV might finally happen | | By Nilay Patel, The Verge | | FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler just proposed a rule change that would require cable and broadcast networks to sell their programming to any company that wants to be a TV provider, not just cable or satellite companies. That means Apple could set up an internet TV service and get all the channels it needs to actually replace your cable box not just a handful of streaming deals like it has now, but a full-on TV package. More» Why This Matters: This is another move towards the inevitable and progress for internet TV. This proposed change still seems a little retro because it pretty much just lets internet TV be like cable. That's a start. But remember, content owners like HBO are also looking to go direct and control their own destiny. Powerful companies will be fighting over the same turf for a long time to come. Cynthia Wisehart |
