Top Stories - August, 29th 2014 | Randy Thom to Deliver Keynote Speech at Mix Sound for Film Event Final Panelists Announced for "Immersive Sound: From Production to Playback" Oscar-winning sound designer/film mixer Randy Thom will deliver the keynote speech to open Mix magazine's special film sound event, "Immersive Sound: From Production to Playback," to be held September 6 on the Sony Pictures Entertainment lot in Culver City, Calif. Thom is currently Director of Sound Design at Skywalker Sound, based in Marin County, California. After working in Public Radio in the 1970s, he began his film career as an assistant to Walter Murch, recording helicopters, guns and flies for Apocalypse Now, as well as assisting in the film's nine-month mix. Ben Burtt later hired him to work on The Empire Strikes Back. He has gone on to work on such groundbreaking films as The Right Stuff, Forrest Gump, Cast Away, The Incredibles, How to Train a Dragon and countless others. He has worked at the legendary Skywalker Sound for more than 35 years, and along the way he has been nominated for 14 Oscars, an Emmy and a Grammy. He won Academy Awards for The Right Stuff and The Incredibles. Thom also has received Career Achievement Awards from the Motion Picture Sound Editors and the Cinema Audio Society. In addition to Thom's keynote speech, highlights of the event include a series of industry panels, divided into Technology and Creative tracks, held throughout the day in the Kim Novak Theatre.
