#1 Batteryless sensors on verge of release
  Via InAVate
A wireless ultra-low-power microchip set for release next year by American firm PsiKick could be a key driver in the development of the Internet of Things. The company was launched by two university professors who have spent the last decade developing 'sub-threshold' microchips. Their creation utilizes the small amount of current that flows through a circuit's transistor, even when it is switched off, to operate with 100 to 1,000 times less power consumption than comparable microchips. More»
Why This Matters: Apparently things are less power-intensive when they're not actually, you know, "on." Read InAVate for context and then hop over to MIT Technology Review to learn more about how PsiKick proposes to take advantage of sub-threshold power and "harvested energy".. –Cynthia Wisehart

#2 Nest, Yale, Samsung promote Thread home automation standard
  By Joseph Palenchar, Twice
A seven-member technology group that includes Nest Labs, Yale Security and Samsung's CE group has defined a wireless mesh-network technology said to offer more security and reliability than the ZigBee and Z-Wave standards for home automation. More»
Why This Matters: A new salvo came yesterday on the fierce home automation front. ZigBee has called the Thread Group and their no-app, transport protocol "cheerfully oblivious," and demonstrating "hubris" that seems "characteristically Google." Now, Z-Wave rings in with a letter to Alliance members. From EETimes, here's a more measured recap of the various groups working with IoT (Internet of Things) standardization, including Apple, Intel, and a number of open source players.–Cynthia Wisehart

#3 Eye Candy: The CNN 10, Better Shared Spaces by Design
  Via CNN
From offices and schools to restaurants and transit stations, most of us inhabit dozens of shared spaces every day without giving them much thought. A new breed of architects, designers, urban planners and other creative types are reimagining the shared spaces we encounter each day. More»
Why This Matters: I found the ideas in these building designs very inspiring and suggestive of how AV could be part of remarkable spaces. I recommend the video, and then I recommend clicking through the gallery of case studies, using the arrows alongside the bottom of the video. There is good information in each study and some possible connections if you're trying to find who today's innovative shared spaces architects and clients are. –Cynthia Wisehart
