Colin Johnson, EE Times   Micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) microphones have become so much more than smaller versions of the once ubiquitous electrostatic induction based microphones -- electrets -- before them. MEMS microphones are enabling a whole new tier of "always on" connected, handheld and wearable electronics that will eventually monitor not just our every sound but also those in the environment around us. More» Why This Matters: OK, this article is dense going, more like a white paper but it's full of tidbits about this fascinating end of the microphone universe. The biggest trend is apparently the market for very-high-end MEMS microphones (which are commonly called high-definition or HD). That's interesting considering that these microphones were once thought of as a commodity for the handheld device market. This article definitely makes them seem like much more than that. Two random things that jumped out at me from the many pages: a MEMS hearing aid that doubles as a Bluetooth headset for listening to music and—the ability to use MEMS arrays to record hand gestures to drive video devices. -Cynthia Wisehart 4.
