HEVC Licensing Terms Not Done Yet
The new HEVC Patent Portfolio License will clear the way for manufacturers to develop hardware-based compression boards based on it, software algorithms that take advantage of it, and newly emerging decoding technology to enable all video files to be displayed on Ultra HD TVs, computers, tablets, and smart cellphones.

Ericsson: Status Quo Is Not an Option For the Future
Looking into Ericsson's crystal ball, consumers in the year 2020 will embrace higher definition, multiple screens and interactivity with a heavy emphasis on social media. The company's latest consumer experience research, part of its "Media Vision 2020" campaign, states that users six years from now will expect TV, film and gaming experiences to be integrated, accessible and tailored to their interests, devices and personal situations.

Netflix Announces European Expansion Plans
Netflix will launch in Germany, France, Switzerland, Austria, Belgium and Luxembourg later this year. The video service announced the expansion into continental Europe late Tuesday last week, but didn't give an exact launch date, or details on pricing or catalog.

FCC Updates 'TVStudy'
The new release fixes a bug in the XML import function which could cause stations with edited matrix patterns to fail to import. This version also adds more error checking to the CBDS database build code that will prevent data with duplicate records and other structure problems from importing.

ESPN Opens New Digital Center
The new facility, DC-2, has a footprint of more than 194,000 square feet with a fiber-based infrastructure that is format agnostic and "future-proof," in the words of ESPN execs.
