| Today's Top Stories | | #1 | Watch a Japanese pianist battle a holographic version of himself | | | via Gizmodo | | | Yoshiki, a Japanese rock pianist, upstaged his own performance when a Pepper's Ghost illusion of himself started a piano piece that he then interrupted. More» Why This Matters: Pepper's Ghosts are having a bit of a comeback driven by news-grabbing "holograms" like Tupac Shakur's performance from beyond the grave. You can take a look at the result here—but you won't learn anything about how it was done, except what you can derive from observation. –Cynthia Wisehart | | | #2 | March Madness & the future of cinema and video technology | | | by David, Keene, AV Network | | | I can't imagine a crazier month in the film industry agenda than the March I just wrapped in Austin. At the opening end: the SXSW Film festival (March 7-15), one of the top film festivals worldwide and spawning ground for a great, growing, democratizing wash of digital content that's seemingly indifferent to what screens it eventually lands on. At the other end, also in Austin: the Giant Screen Cinema Association's Film Expo (March 24-25)– that stalwart bastion of IMAX and all films that you can only see big– the bigger the better and if it's still big lush 70mm celluloid whirring through the projection booth the better (for now– spoiler alert– IMAX is going all digital too). More» Why This Matters: Even as new-generation cinema and large venue projection technologies come online, technology-based business and distribution models in the movie, education, and entertainment markets evolve and morph even faster. NewBay's David Keene tracks some of the big changes underway by attending two pivotal events in March– SXSW Film, and the Giant Screen Cinema Association's Film Expo. –Cynthia Wisehart | | | #3 | Fujitsu develops glove-style wearable device | | | via AV Interactive | | | Fujitsu Laboratories has developed a glove equipped with a Near Field Communication (NFC) tag reader and that features gesture-based input for maintenance and other operations. The glove has been designed to be used in environments where using a traditional smart device would be unsuitable. More » Why This Matters: It's kind of an industrial interface—users wearing the glove can receive and execute work instructions just by touching an object. –Cynthia Wisehart |
