#1 Apple Joins Google In Pressing Court To Curb Patent Abuse
Apple and Google, saying they're tired of being slapped with frivolous patent suits that cost millions of dollars in legal fees, are asking the U.S. Supreme Court to let them hit back. The technology companies are leading a group of firms urging the court to make it easier to collect attorneys' fees from patent-holders who lose infringement suits. In two cases to be argued this month, the justices for the first time will consider the rules that govern fee awards in patent litigation. (Bloomberg)
Why This Is Important:  Even though most cases are thrown out, more than 100,000 companies were threatened in 2012 with infringement in efforts to receive royalties, according to a White House report.

#2 Will Nadella Appointment Weigh On Debate Over Tech Visas?
In his first e-mail to Microsoft employees in his newly-minted role as chief executive, Satya Nadella included a brief but important section titled, "Who am I?"Over the last week especially, the world came to know a lot more about the executive, after the news was leaked that Nadella was the expected choice for the company's top job. But still, a dark horse he was, beating out splashier choices like former Nokia CEO Stephen Elop and Ford CEO Alan Mulally. So we've still got a lot to learn about the new leader in Redmond. (CNET)
Why This Is Important: The heads of some tech companies are calling for an increase in the number of visas permitted, while critics point to the U.S.'s high unemployment as a dart against the practice.

#3 Why Carriers Won't Win War On Netflix
It was only a matter of time. The simmer surrounding the hyped "death of Net neutrality" escalated to a boil Wednesday when a blogger who works for a cloud startup claimed that Verizon is now using the opportunity to "wage war against Netflix" and other content providers. (InformationWeek)
Why This Is Important: Bandwidth performance, monitoring and priority will take center stage as a result of the net neutrality cessation. How it all shakes out is still to be determined.

The coevolution of software and new hardware form factors will intermediate and digitize many of the things we do and experience in business, life and our world. Excerpt from the first memo released by new Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella

Will The Cloud Divide America And Europe?

By Rajesh Ram
As President Obama made his much-awaited speech on National Security Agency (NSA) reform, I returned from Europe after meeting several enterprise customers and partners, discussing their plans for cloud storage. I was alarmed to witness the seeds of a developing rift, one that could isolate European customers from their American counterparts. While this divide will affect the technological choices European companies will make, the root cause is more ideological in nature. It's critical that we pay attention to this before it impacts the future of our emerging industry. More »
