#1 Yahoo Overhauls Its Advertising
The search engine is changing the name of its ad exchange from Right Media to Yahoo Ad Exchange, and its 18-month-old audience-targeting program Genome will now be called Yahoo Audience Ads. The company is also rolling out its automated buying tool, Yahoo Ad Manager, and will be offering better ad targeting capabilities on Tumblr under a new name: Sponsored Posts Powered by Yahoo Advertising.
Why This Matters: Yahoo wants to challenge Google for more ad dollars and believes stepping up its offerings and simplifying their use by marketers could help the company do that.

#2 JeffreyGroup Opens Pinta, Its New Hispanic Ad Agency
The independent marketing and corporate communications agency's new unit will be based in Miami with offices in Los Angeles and New York, The New York Times reports. Pinta will begin with 20 employees and work with existing JeffreyGroup clients that include Diageo's Johnnie Walker; Facebook; Fox Hispanic Media; TD Bank; and T-Mobile US. Mike Valdes-Fauli, previously president of JeffreyGroup, will become president and CEO of Pinta.
Why This Matters: With spending power of more than $1 trillion a year and rising, the Hispanic population in the U.S. is a growing marketer target. Brands now have another choice among agencies. Peter DeLuca of T-Mobile says, "Consumers are picking and choosing where they acquire brand information and we want them to learn about T-Mobile in a language they're comfortable with."

#3 Despite Digital Video Growth, Agency Execs Say Traditional TV Still Works Well For Marketers
At a CES panel, agency and online publishing execs acknowledged that digital still lags well behind TV in distribution reach, according to an Ad Age report. "People are still watching more than four hours of live TV a day," said Stuart Sproule, president of TBWA's Digital Arts Network. "TV still works; it sells products," said Richard Guest, president of Tribal Worldwide's U.S. operations. Jeff Minsky, director of emerging media at OMD said while college students watch less TV, they usually return once they graduate and get a job.
Why This Matters: While some dollars are moving, even AOL Networks CEO Bob Lord says, "We have a long way to go" to reach the eyeballs TV distribution gets. "Video reach still isn't there yet for curated content."

'Today' Show Sees Chance To Get Back In The Game As Olympics Approach
By John Consoli

On Monday, ABC News, feeling its oats and wanting to crow to the media, put out a press release that proclaimed its morning show, Good Morning America, scored "the largest fourth-quarter total viewer lead over NBC's Today in more than 22 years."

Facts are facts, and that is a fact. Through the first quarter of the 2013-14 broadcast season, which is the fourth quarter of calendar year 2013, GMA was averaging 5.68 million total viewers compared to 4.97 million for Today, a lead of 710,000 viewers per morning, according to Nielsen data. That's up from a lead of 520,000 viewers in the fourth quarter of 2012.

You can't blame ABC News for wanting to stick it to NBC News. After all, until April 2012, when GMA drew more viewers than Today, its NBC rival had held the viewer title for 852 consecutive weeks. NBC News is, understandably, staying rather mum about Today's ratings.

However, beneath the surface, there is a glimmer of hope that things might be starting to turn around for the embattled morning show. While most media agencies who buy the news dayparts for their clients do so using the 25-54 demo as currency on which ratings guarantees are based, Today in fourth-quarter 2013 gained 274,000 18-49 viewers per show compared to the previous year, and went from trailing GMA by 80,000 viewers in the demo, to leading by 144,000, 1.64 million to 1.50 million. Younger is still good for advertisers, unless we're talking about pharmaceutical companies or high-end, luxury automakers.

In that key 25-54 "news demo," Today gained 284,000 viewers compared to GMA's increase of 215,000 viewers. That cut the GMA viewer lead in the demo to 71,000 viewers per morning from 90,000, with GMA averaging 2.145 million viewers to Today's 2.074.

And perhaps most importantly, the 2014 Winter Games is also on the horizon, and Today usually gets an audience lift once the Olympic telecasts begin.

What should the folks at Today be worried about, concerning a possible Olympics lift? And what demo does the show really need to work on luring in?

ESPN's BCS Championship Telecast Scores 25.5 Million Viewers

ESPN's coverage of the thrilling Florida State-Auburn Vizio BCS Championship game drew 25.5 million viewers, slightly down from last year's BCS college football championship game, according to network officials. The title game, in which Florida State defeated Auburn 34-31 on a dramatic, late fourth-quarter touchdown, still ranks as the third most-watched cable telecast of all time, behind the 26.3 million viewers who tuned in to last year's Alabama-Notre Dame BCS game and the cable record 27 million watchers who viewed the 2011 Auburn-Oregon State BCS Championship game, according to Nielsen. Overall, ESPN's "BCS Megacast" drew 26 million viewers across ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNEWS. In addition, WatchESPN generated 553,000 unique viewers online, a 53% increase over last year's live stream of the BCS Championship game.

TOMORROW'S BIG RATINGS STORIES TODAY
CBS Looks To Give Power To the 'People'
Kat Dennings and Beth Behrs, costars on the CBS sitcom 2 Broke Girls, will cohost the 40th Annual People's Choice Awards on CBS, airing Wednesday night at 9 p.m. The telecast will air live from the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles with Mark Burnett serving as executive producer for the fifth consecutive year. Glee leads the list of TV nominees with eight. Presenters will include Jessica Alba, Christina Aguilera, Kaley Cuoco, Sandra Bullock, Emily Deschanel, Robert Downey Jr., Zac Efron, Juliana Marguilies, Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake and many others. The upshot: Last year's telecast, also on a Wednesday night in January, drew 9.3 million viewers and a 2.7 18-49 demo rating. Those are solid enough, but it finished second to ABC's Modern Family in the 9-9:30 p.m. half-hour. The sitcom drew 12 million viewers and a 4.7 demo rating and has its midseason premiere on Wednesday night.

From 'Fire' to 'PD': That's the Chicago Way
Dick Wolf's latest TV drama series, Chicago PD, a spinoff of his Chicago Fire, premieres on NBC Wednesday night at 10, making it the third Wolf series on the network's primetime schedule this season. Chicago Fire is now in its second season, airing on Tuesday nights at 10, and is NBC's second most-watched drama, while Law & Order: SVU is now in its 15th season, airing on Wednesday nights at 9 and currently the network's third most-watched drama. Chicago PD, centered around hardnosed detective Hank Voight (Jason Beghe)—a character that first appeared in Chicago Fire—follows the exploits of the Chicago Police Department's elite Intelligence Unit. The series has an ensemble cast that also includes Sophia Bush. The upshot: NBC has a planned Chicago PD crossover episode with Law & Order: SVU during the February sweeps and plans also call for characters from Chicago Fire and Chicago PD to make appearances in each others series.

'Psych' Back To Psych Up USA Viewers
The detective dramedy returns for its eighth season on USA on Wednesday night at 9 p.m. after averaging 2.5 million viewers per episode and a 0.8 18-49 demo rating last season. USA aired a two-hour special Psych: The Musical, cowritten and directed by Psych creator Steve Franks in mid-December and it drew about 2.2 million viewers and a 0.8 demo rating. The upshot: There have been rumors since season three that this series was going to be canceled but it keeps on drawing viewers and getting renewed. It is currently the network's longest-running original series.
