And so is all the music you have yet to compose.
Violinist, teacher, and composer Roger Zahab, Faculty, MFA in Music Composition
The MFA in Music Composition at Vermont College of Fine Arts —the very first of its kind in the nation—offers you the chance to forge your own creative path in a pioneering, rigorous model of graduate music education.
The MFA in Music Composition offers emerging musicians the opportunity to refine their composition skills, and grow more vital as artists, composers, and music educators. Students come to our program from diverse stylistic backgrounds and have varied compositional interests. Our musically inclusive program reflects that diversity, offering significant opportunities to work in and across five focus areas: Film, TV & Game Scoring, Concert Music, Electronic Music, Songwriting, and Jazz.
"VCFA's Composition program is unique, in that it incorporates the gamut of music-creating," said musician and composer Rick Baitz, the program's faculty chair. "Here, we seek to continue the ever-evolving tradition of concert music while offering comprehensive mentorship in music for media, jazz, songwriting and electronic music. This is the most compassionate environment I know of for nurturing creativity; at once inclusive and intense. There's a palpable sense of community and mutual exchange between mentors and their students. I believe that the practice of learning is enhanced by the rhythm of bi-annual residencies: we meet for a week of complete musical immersion, and return to our lives to process and create -- only to re-convene, having incorporated the residency experience in our lives during the preceding months. The residencies are heightened by the excitement of sharing our growth over time -- and this applies to students, faculty, and staff. I teach at VCFA because it is a program conceived after my own heart: I totally share its values of creative diversity, individuality and personal connection."
Experience personalized mentorship for two years, have your work performed here on campus by one of our ensembles-in-residence every six months, and become part of a vibrant community of well-known industry professionals, visiting musicians, and distinguished faculty.
At Vermont College of Fine Arts, you can carve out time away from your regular life, forge your own creative path, refine your composition skills and grow more vital as an artist, composer, and music teacher.
