Marty Garrison to Receive Radio World Excellence in Engineering Award
He's NPR's VP of technology operations, distribution and broadcast engineering, the team that ensures that NPR programming gets on the air, oversees distribution of public radio programming via NPR Satellite Services and is responsible for NPR's back-office systems. He supervised the move of NPR's technical operations this year to new headquarters.

FCC Warns Against Airing False EAS Tones
Turner Broadcasting and a Kentucky TV station have run afoul of the FCC's prohibition against airing EAS tones for any reason other than airing a real alert or a test to avoid panicking the public.

A New Day at the FCC
New FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler told staffers in a meeting on Tuesday that during his confirmation hearing he described himself as an unabashed supporter of competition. "Yet we all know that competition does not always flourish by itself; it must be supported and protected if its benefits are to be enjoyed," he added.

Two Stations Attacked in Mexico (noodls.com)
Around election time it is always sobering to be reminded of how things are elsewhere. Reporters Without Borders reports that two radio stations in southern Mexico owned by a politician were attacked in late October by approximately 15 masked men. They destroyed transmission equipment and assaulted staffers on duty.

Dana Whitehair says that he "didn't come here to fail." With new facilities and partnerships he wants to push WSCL and WSDL into the big leagues. There will be noticeable changes, he says.

'Mute' Button for Any Noise in the World (HLNtv.com)
Though only in development, an Austrian designer has created a device that operates like noise-canceling headphones but can be used on a window to disrupt noises transmitted via the window. It can also selectively filter noises to let pleasant ones pass.
