#1 FAA expands portable electronic device use on planes
  via Aviation Pros
The U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Administrator Michael Huerta today announced that the FAA has determined that airlines can safely expand passenger use of Portable Electronic Devices (PEDs) during all phases of flight, and is immediately providing the airlines with implementation guidance. Due to differences among fleets and operations, the implementation will vary among airlines, but the agency expects many carriers will prove to the FAA that their planes allow passengers to safely use their devices in airplane mode, gate-to-gate, by the end of the year. #2 Is this the opera of the future? (with great pictures)
  by Jeffrey Marlow, Wired Science
At 10:34 PM on a recent evening, passengers at Los Angeles' Union Station scurried down well-worn linoleum hallways toward departing trains. Among the crowds was a man carrying a backpack, sauntering between the rows of chairs and singing to himself. The scene was far from unusual given the station's diverse and colorful clientele, but there was something different– people were actually paying attention. An entourage of spectators, all wearing matching black Sennheiser headphones, traced the man's path, hanging on every word…as it turned into a full operatic production for the headphone-equipped, voices joining with an orchestral score in swirling synergy. Why This Matters: I was there and it was an incredible experience. Blended in with the passengers, employees, police, and homeless were: a live orchestra, backup singers, wandering soloists, random dancers and antenna farms, all interacting via a Sennheiser 9000 wireless mic system—all mixed live for each other and the audience in a discreet control room. We shared the soundtrack through luxurious headphones—but where you went, what you saw, who you followed, and even what you didn't end up seeing, was entirely personal. It was addictive, and that's not usually how I feel about opera. -Cynthia Wisehart
