Today's Top Stories | #1 | Sony beats the high-resolution audio drum | | by Joseph Palancher, Twice | | Sony wants to expand the appeal of high-resolution audio playback by introducing the first in a series of audio products said to take the confusion out of high-res playback. More» Why This Matters: This from a press conference today in New York. High resolution audio "will eventually impact all Sony products." -Cynthia Wisehart | | #2 | EMC to unveil products challenging cloud storage sellers | | by Dina Bass, Bloomberg | | EMC said it's introducing new products that will be offered via a faster and more simplified buying process, challenging the appeal of Web-based computing services from Amazon.com and other cloud providers. More» Why This Matters: This Microsoft-supplied article proposes making apps that are "frequency intelligent" and not locked to a given frequency range. That's something AV. You can see why EMC is thinking hard about this one. How do they get ahead of the cloud? You could call their idea a "captive cloud" (it works like the cloud but it's your hardware). Or an "intracloud"? It's proposed to be cheaper than clouds in the wild. How does that work? Still, for AV applications it might develop into a way to get cloud look-and-feel for customers who want more earth-bound control. -Cynthia Wisehart

| #3 | Why a New Golden Age for UI Design Is Around the Corner | | by Cliff Kuang, Wired | | Over the past 30 years…designers have focused on perfecting user interfaces—placing a button in just the right place for a camera trigger or collapsing the entire payment process into a series of swipes and taps. But in the coming era of ubiquitous sensors and miniaturized mobile computing, our digital interactions won't take place simply on screens…they will happen all around us, constantly, as we go about our day. Designers will be creating not products or interfaces but experiences, a million invisible transactions. More» Why This Matters: Bear with this story past the opening section on Walt Disney World, especially if you are in charge of designing user experiences for products or for systems. It's a coffee break mind doodle (with input from Microsoft Research's Bill Buxton) that might unlock something. –Cynthia Wisehart | | | | Find Us Online |
