Today's Top Stories
#1 Christie unveils 4K projectors for 3D
  via InAVate
The 3-chip DLP projectors, anchored by the Christie TruLife electronics platform with 1.2 Gigapixel per second, floating point architecture, offer full 4096 by 2160 resolution at 120Hz for 3D. More»
Why This Matters: As 3D wears out its welcome in the home, the remaining applications require wow factor or super-accuracy—which means resolution. –Cynthia Wisehart

#2 BBC realizes the obvious: puts 3D plans on hold
  by Peter Bright, Ars Technica
The BBC has been running a trial in which it films and broadcasts certain sports events and dramatic productions in 3D. Although this trial is still not over—the Doctor Who 50th anniversary special in November will be one of the final 3D broadcasts—the decision has been made: once the trial ends, 3D will be abandoned, at least until 2016. More»
Why This Matters: This is on the heels of ESPN's announcement last month that they are shuttering (pun intended) their 3D. The BBC test demonstrated that their viewers aren't inclined to watch 3D even when they're handed the hardware. The science seems to indicate that 3D is more compelling when viewed from a roller coaster in a multi-million dollar, out-of-home experience based on a ten-figure movie franchise. –Cynthia Wisehart

#3 Arri's managing director: HD is "dumbed down" to make 4K look good
  by Adrian Pennington, Hollywood Reporter
Arri's managing director Franz Kraus has called into question the industry's inexorable push toward 4K by suggesting that HD content displayed on HD screens at equipment trade shows is not being shown at its optimum quality in order to compare unfavorably with 4K displays. More»
Why This Matters: It's a 4K kind of day. This is kind of tangential but it's a fun, inside-ball rant on the machinations that do indeed go on at tradeshows. Maybe not as much as grumpy Franz is saying, and he is of course marketing the Arri theology. Nothing wrong with that. You can agree or not. –Cynthia Wisehart
