#1 The Coming Smartphone Bloodbath
Sprint's losses grew to $1.6 billion in Q2. HTC said it will likely deliver an operating loss due to rising costs brought on by intensifying smartphone competition. BlackBerry announced its share of the U.S. smartphone market is down to a meager 1.1 percent. Meantime, Asus is aiming squarely at the U.S. for a big launch next year.
Why This Is Important: If the past tells us anything, as the smartphone market matures a number of vendors should be expected to die naturally by attrition, leaving a small number of vendors to control the majority of the market. It unfolded that way with PCs, DVD players, VCRs and most other CE markets.

Why This Is Important: Loeb has not disclosed just how much Sony stock he owns.

#3 Asus Pulling Back on Windows RT, Chairman Says
Asus's Jonney Shih has made some crazy bets over the years — teeny-tiny laptops, phones that turn into tablets, and even a seven-inch tablet that can be held to the ear to make phone calls.
Why This Is Important: Shih said a 10-inch tablet may make the most sense.
