MCN Newswire: VR Tech Driving Programmer Experimentation; FCC on Set-top Privacy: Quid Pro Quo; NCTC Members Foresee Challenging Bandwidth Demands

Top Stories - Feb. 16, 2016
COVER STORY: VR Fills Out the Picture SUBSCRIBER EXCLUSIVE
Virtual reality is poised to become extremely real, and programmers and studios are lining up to take part in what's expected to be a wild ride as content creators frame strategies around VR and the emerging world of 360-degree video production during this nascent phase of the market.  more
WHY THIS MATTERS: This comes as inexpensive VR viewers, such as Google cardboard, provide consumers with a gateway to the new format, which is also evolving into more advanced platforms such as the Samsung Gear VR and the new Oculus Rift, but like HDTV before it, the new format won't get very far very fast without compelling content. FCC Proposes Voluntary Set-Top-Privacy Quid Pro Quo
FCC chairman Tom Wheeler is proposing to require third parties to agree to voluntarily adhere to existing privacy regulations in exchange for access to set-top data, according to an FCC official familiar with the plan. more
WHY THIS MATTERS: After comments Wheeler made in "The Washington Post" last week had some cable operators wondering whether the FCC would try to apply new regs to edge providers and tech companies, the official told "Multichannel News" that the Notice of Proposed Rulemaking on "Expanding Consumers' Video Navigation Choices," scheduled for a Feb. 18 vote, did not propose new privacy regs, but proposed voluntary adherence to cable-like data protections as a quid pro quo for getting access to set-top data. Get more set-top proposal updates under NEWS, below.

NCTC Panel: Coping With Bandwidth Demands
Cable technology officers, dealing with bandwidth consumption on their networks growing at 40%-50% per year, have to plan ahead, given that network capacity can't grow as fast as demand and given that a small number of heavy users tilt the scale so heavily. more
WHY THIS MATTERS: During an opening general session of the National Cable Television Cooperative's Winter Education Conference, CTOs of small cable ops said techs like self-driving cars and the connected home could push bandwidth requirements to challenging levels beyond current predictions.
