#1 Optical phased array (OPA): Single silicon chip projects images
  via InAVate
Researchers at Caltech have developed a silicon chip that functions as a lens-free projector. More»
Why This Matters: The so-called optical phased array (OPA) is integrated into the chip to allow the electronic projection of an image using a single laser diode. So far it can do only the very simplest of projections. But—it's a single chip, so it's research to be aware of. Here's Cal Tech's account of how OPA uses phase shifting to bend light with a tiny chip. -Cynthia Wisehart

#2 New Sony FMP-X10 media player brings Netflix 4K to legacy X9 TVs
  by Mike Wheatley, HDTV Test
Sony's main pitch is that the FMP-X10 gives viewers access to more than 200 4K movies available through its Video Unlimited 4K content library, but that's not all this new piece of hardware (which looks eerily similar to a PS4) is capable of. More»
Why This Matters: I see your videos. Some of you already do branding because you know how and you have budget. But—and I'm talking especially to integrators here—if you do take casual video at your shop or from site (when your customer allows) this new feature is the absolute cheapest, lowest-tech way to get a quick 3-second brand identity pre-roll on your videos. Then, if they get embedded somewhere outside your YouTube channel they won't be anonymous. Apparently you only have to make the little pre-roll once and then you can assign it to whichever videos you want. I have not tested it.–Cynthia Wisehart

#3 YouTube creators can now add a 3-second intro to all their videos
  by Stan Schroeder, Mashable
YouTube has added a new feature for content creators: they can now add a 3-second intro to all their videos. The intro will automatically start on videos on their channel. More»
Why This Matters: This is an effort to help companies update to conferencing mics—any mic of any kind is eligible for the trade-in.–Cynthia Wisehart
