Most people would say it's the subtle, spontaneous changes in tone and tempo that convey emotion and creativity. Most people, as it turns out, would be wrong. Both experts and novices alike were given clips from performances at a musical competition and promised $8 if they could accurately guess the winner based on the clips. Across all the experiments, those given the chance to view muted, video-only clips from the competition consistently performed the best when asked to identify the winner. More» Why This Matters: Because it makes me CRAZY! So many questions. What kind of recordings were used? High fidelity recordings or crappy camera mic recordings? Did the recordings approximate the live performance as well as the video did? Are people just vacating their audio senses because they listen to so much low res audio? Apparently, both the live judges and the people watching/listening to recordings prioritized the visual performance. Does this mean that sound systems don't matter that much and clubs and churches should spend their money on passionate visuals? This story spread like wildfire this morning all over the groovy tech sites. So it is now part of the cultural thought-soup. I need a drink.
